The State Police at Reading are investigating a fire that occurred on Aug. 30 at A&L Farms, located on Mountain Road in Hamburg. Police received the report of the incident at approximately 9:20 p.m.

The fire that was reported occurred in a chicken house approximately 600 feet in length and 100 feet in width. The house was not housing chickens at the time of the fire. Fire crews arrived from the Shartlesville Fire Company, and the fire had already broken through the roof of the structure. Crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings where 70,000 chickens were housed. The loss is estimated at $1.7 million.

The structure is a complete loss and was almost entirely consumed by fire. No injuries were reported.

The investigation is ongoing and the PA State Police were at the scene on Sept. 1 to continue the origin and cause investigation. No causes have been identified or eliminated at this point. The investigation will continue along with the assistance of heavy machinery to remove debris that has collapsed into the structure.
