Maxatawny couple scammed by Best Rate Financial; Company defrauded thousands, FBI investigating

A Maxatawny Township couple are the victims of theft by deception after being scammed by mortgage adjustment services company Best Rate Financial. The FBI is investigating the company that has defrauded thousands more across several states.

State Police Reading report that sometime between Nov. 14 and 18, the couple was contacted via telephone by an employee of Best Rate Financial, a company that claimed to offer mortgage adjustment services. They accepted the offer and followed the instructions provided by Best Rate Financial to begin the process, which included sending Best Rate Financial a check in the amount of $4,391. They also disclosed other personal information including Social Security Numbers and bank account information per the application process.

“Over the course of the last year, the victims have since discovered that Best Rate Financial is essentially a scam and have not been able to recover their money,” according to the State Police report.

During the investigation State Police Reading contacted the FBI and learned that Best Rate Financial is already under investigation and several arrests have been made. The company defrauded a thousand victims across several states.
