It was a six run inning that ended it all for the Kutztown Area High School softball team. In a PIAA Class AA quarterfinal round game, Nanticoke scored six runs in the top of the first against the Cougars and then went on to win the game, 8-4 on June 7.
For the Lady Cougars, it ended a season in which they won a district championship and owned an overall record of 20-6.
A two-run double and an RBI triple helped Nanticoke jump out to a 6-0 lead, one that Kutztown could not recover from.
THe Cougars scored a run in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to five, but Nanticoke came back with two in the top of the fifth to make it 8-1. In the bottom of the fifth, Jodi Weaknecht hit a two-run homer to give Kutztown some life. But they managed just one more run, an RBI double by Tessa Dorr in the seventh.
Losing pitcher Meghan Donat led the Kutztown offense with three hits in the game. Anna Behm and Taylor Faust each had two hits.
On June 4, the Cougars opened the state tournament with a 7-3 win over Chestnut Ridge. Down 3-0, Kutztown came back with four runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Behm had two hits, a run scored and one RBI, while Weaknecht had two hits and a runs scored and Faust singled and drove in two runs.
Donat was the winning pitcher, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk. She struckout four.
