Suicide. For some it’s the only solution to feelings of despair. In the aftermath, however, family and friends are left confused and grief-stricken. Guilt can overwhelm because warning signs were not recognized.

Over one million suicides occur annually worldwide; 37,000 people reportedly kill themselves each year in the United States alone. The true number of suicides is likely higher because some (single-car accident, overdose, or shooting) are not recognized as a suicide. Suicide is the eighth leading cause of death in males and the 16th leading cause of death in females.

Sam Waters, the director and founder of a new no-cost counseling center at Conestoga Mennonite Church, knows full well the affects and aftermath of suicide. At the young age of 27, Sam’s sister Evelyn took her own life after years of physical and emotional abuse by her husband. Ten years later, Sam’s nephew Greg committed suicide shortly after his wife divorced him.

For the victims of suicide like Sam’s sister and nephew, there could have been hope for tomorrow, if only helpful options could have been available and given.

The lack of insurance is a contributing reason people do not get the help they need. There were more than 50 million people uninsured last year. And, even when insurance coverage is not an issue, the co-pays can be a financial stumbling block for many.

This is the fundamental purpose behind Still Waters Ministries, a no-cost counseling service. When a client walks through the doors, they will not have the worry and burden of payment for services. All funding will be provided through private and corporate donations.

Services include individual counseling, support groups, and topical seminars. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 610-286-9124 or check out our website at www.still-waters-ministries.org.
