The 13-15 yr old team, Tulpehocken Thunder, won the Lebanon County Youth Legion Tourney to qualify for Regionals.On July 18, the Thunder defeated regular season champion Newmanstown, 3-2, to capture the league championship.
It was a three-run sixth inning that did the damage to host Newmanstown. Four walks surrendered by Newmanstown pitcher Travis Zimmerman helped spark the sixth inning rally.
Heading into the inning, Zimmerman had fanned seven Tulpehocken batters and was dominating the game.
A bases loaded walk, a RBI ground out and a pop-up bunt single produced the three runs in the inningl.
The victory for Tulpehocken was a big upset considering they finished in fourth place in the Lebanon County League’s regular season with a modest record of 8-10.
The Thunder won four striaght games in the league tournament to take the championship away from heavily favored Newsmanstown.
The victory sends the Thunder to the state regional tournament that begins this Saturday, July 28 in Boyertown.
