WEST GOSHEN — A newborn child gained the story of a lifetime on Sept. 25 when his parents were forced to deliver him along Route 202.
Adam Wesley Hanna was born on the shoulder of Route 202’s southbound lanes at 6:42 on Tuesday evening.
Adam was delivered on the roadside by his father, Shaun, after he and the expectant mother, AmyBeth, were unable to reach Chester County Hospital in time.
The couple had left their Merwood Drive home in Morgantown at about 6:10 p.m. and began the trek across Chester County to the hospital, where their first child was born. AmyBeth had gone into labor around 4 p.m., and Shaun had raced home from work to drive her to the hospital.
The Hanna family was driving along Route 202 to the hospital when AmyBeth told her husband that she did not think she, or Adam, could wait any longer.
“We didn’t quite make it,” Shaun Hanna said. “My wife said ‘pull over, I’ve got to push.’”
Shaun Hanna dialed 911, and the operator told him the couple had two options: They could continue to the hospital and hope they make it in time, or they could pull over and wait for paramedics to arrive.
Shaun Hanna pulled the car over just before the Paoli Pike exit on Route 202 and rushed to the other side of the car to care for his wife.
When Shaun Hanna reached her, Adam’s head was already visible. Hanna said it was at that moment that he knew his son’s delivery was in his hands. With a 911 operator on the line for support, Shaun told his wife to push.
And with just one push, Adam Wesley Hanna was born at mile marker 10.4 of Route 202.
“The 911 operator said ‘congratulations daddy,’ and it hit me what had just happened,” Shaun Hanna said.
The 911 operator continued to walk Shaun through the next steps. He made sure the umbilical cord was not wrapped around the baby’s neck and checked to see if he was breathing normally. He was.
Soon after members of the West Goshen Police Department and Good Fellowship Ambulance Company arrived, and the mother and new baby were transported by ambulance to Chester County Hospital.
Adam Wesley Hanna was born at 9 pounds, 8 ounces and measured 22 inches long. He, sister Gwen, 2, and parents were back at home on Thursday.
