Greetings! As the new editor of the Southern Berks news, I would like to introduce myself to my readers and the community. I graduated from Salisbury High School in Lehigh County in 2007 and went on to continue my studies at Kutztown University, where I graduated with a Bachelors Degree in English with a concentration in Cultural and Media Studies in 2011. I have previously been freelancing for local publications in the Lehigh Valley, working as a web reporter for WFMZ and have been part of the film staff at the 19th Street Theatre in Allentown. Each of these positions has helped to instill in me a great love for local events, local government, and the community. Being able to work, report and write for the community where I grew up gave me a new appreciation for the area.

Im eager to dive into the Southern Berks area and make it my new home. I look forward to expanding the love I have for community journalism to the Southern Berks area, where I will get to explore my new territory, meet new people and become involved with new events. Getting out in the community, attending local functions and talking with the residents is my favorite part of the job. Working as a reporter for the past year and a half has shown me how important and refreshing it is to become involved. Attending borough or municipal meetings, school board meetings and commissioner meetings has shown me that everyone has the ability to make a real difference in their community and make a positive change if you just get out there to have your voice heard. Hearing the discussions from the elected officials gives a new perspective on why certain changes are being made in efforts to improve your hometown. I find it very important to support the local area artists, and to buy local products made or grown by local vendors.

I like to spend my spare time outdoors, walking in nature, riding bike, watching films, and listening to new musical talent. I have a Border collie named Marley who is going to turn 5 in May. (And he was not named after Marley and Me, which is a question I am often asked.) I love animals, especially dogs. I would be interested in seeing your beloved pets.

Living in Pennsylvania gives us great diversity and the opportunity to witness the change of seasons. Springtime is one of my favorite seasons of the year; the birds are out, flowers and trees begin to bud and the community becomes livelier in outdoor activities. When the weather warms up, I will be venturing around the community by bike, testing out the Schuylkill River Trail, exploring the Farmers Market and looking for new locations to hike. I like to get my exercise by being outside, I enjoy throwing Frisbee, going for a swim and being in the sunshine. Expect to be reading about my local outdoor adventures once the spring season shifts into gear.

I would like to invite you to introduce yourself, let me know what you love about the neighborhoods in Southern Berks, tell me some of your favorite annual events to visit and what some are the must sees in the area. This newspaper should be a reflection of the community it serves. Please feel more than welcome to contact me about your next upcoming event. I am also interested in hearing from the local voices. If you would be interested in sharing your opinion in a column, doing some reporting yourself, or taking photographs around the community, I would love to hear from you! Email me at ethiel@berksmontnews.com. I am so excited to be the editor of the Southern Berks Newspaper.
