Firefighters spent almost five hours trying to knock down a fire that destroyed the home of Dave Evans at 21 Oak Street Tuesday, March 26.

After a preliminary investigation, fire officials believe an electrical issue started the fire.

Andrew Duncan, assistant fire chief for the Gilbertsville Fire Company, said the fire began around 7:45 a.m. and crews had it under control in about an hour. Duncan said crews had to do extensive overhaul work on the house after the fire was out.

No one was injured in the fire, according to a family member of the homeowner. Duncan said there were no pets in the house either.

A neighbor said the house was one of the first built on the street. He also said that Evans was in the shower when the fire started and Evans was alerted to the situation because another neighbor saw the fire.

The neighbor said that Evans was given a sweatshirt because he left the house bare-chested.

The Southeastern Pennsylvania chapter of the Red Cross has volunteers helping the victims of the fire. They are providing two people with food, clothing and shelter.

New Hanover Police, New Hanover ladder 37, Boyertown, Ringing Hill Fire Company, Pennsburg Fire Company, Limerick Heavy Rescue, Sassamanville and Gilbertsville Fire Rescue were all on the scene.
