Studio B celebrates Motherhood

Opening Mother’s Day weekend, STUDIO B celebrates Motherhood in an invitational art exhibit entitled VALUE: WOMAN. ARTIST. MOTHER. The exhibit’s free opening reception and Meet the Artists event is scheduled for Friday, May 10, 2013, from 5:00-9:00 p.m.

Curated by local artists and former college roommates Angela Colasanti and Tara Dolan, the exhibit explores the relationships between womanhood, artistic expression and motherhood and is built around the dual meaning of the art term VALUE:

noun: the lightness or darkness of a color.

noun: relative worth, merit or importance.

“This exhibit asks the community to look deeper into the work of the artists… to see themselves or someone they know… and to think about the challenges and rewards of being a woman, artist and mother within our society,” noted Dolan.

By reconnecting after becoming mothers themselves, Dolan and Colasanti discovered numerous common themes in their experiences, despite their divergent paths as women, artists, and mothers.

Colasanti explained the parameters for choosing the artists for the exhibit: “We sought to create a broad canvas of diverse motherhood experiences, as well as a wide range of artistic media. As each artist was added, the common threads between their individual experiences emerged into a series of cohesive artistic themes, often centered on dual meanings of other art terms, such as balance, form or tone.”

Together, the seventeen regional artists represent a wide cross section of society including young mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, adoptive, and foster mothers. The exhibit features painting, drawing, fibers, ceramics, jewelry, mixed media and sculpture. In addition to Colasanti and Dolan, new work will be presented by Linda Rohrbach-Austerberry, Mary Brady Begnardi, Debra Burkert, Stephanie Corfee, Rachel Blosser-Derstine, Elizabeth Flaherty, Juanita Gaspari, Deborah Hamburger, Peggy Lonjin Olley, Meredith Mustard, Darla Rodriguez, Patti Tinsman-Schaffer, Sarah Smith, Teresa Vadala and Elisabeth Walakovits.

The exhibit will remain on display in the gallery through June 15. Visitors are welcomed to tour the exhibit during regular gallery hours on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. or by appointment. Please visit for more information.
