Donald Hahn

Mr. Donald Hahn, 91, of Cumru Twp., passed away on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at the Reading Hospital.

He was the widower of Arlene M. (Tobias) Hahn who died on May 29, 2009.

Born in Reading, he was a son of the late George W. and Lillie F. (Snader) Hahn.

Mr. Hahn worked in the Engineer Department of the former American Chain and Cable Company, Inc. in Reading during the 1950 & 1960. Later he went to work for the former Manu Mine in Angelica before returning to A.C.C. Donald was a Craftsman, Machinist and Hobbyist, he could build anything. He bought a farm house in Cumru Twp., and added new additions. He built two steam driven Engines. Donald enjoyed making his own wine and baking his own bread, and as a beekeeper, collecting his own honey for more baking. He was Past President of the Hilltoppers Senior Club. Donald had a love for animals, especially for his dog Charlie. Above all else, Donald and his wife had a deep love for their children. He was a great dad!


Surviving is daughter, Darlene M. (Hahn), wife of Raz Sugarwala of Lancaster, PA; son, Donald G., husband of Karen Hahn of Leesport, PA; daughter Barbara L. (Hahn), wife of Barry L. Swartz of Mohnton.

Grandchildren: Jeremy J. Hahn of Mohnton; Laura J. Sugarwala of Rochester, NY; Benjamin J. Sugarwala of Charlotte, NC; and Melinda S. Swartz of Mohnton.

He was predeceased by a son, James W. Hahn on June 2, 2008, and a brother, William Hahn.

Relatives and Friends were invited to attend his Funeral Service on Friday, June 21, 2013 at 8 p.m. at Giles & Yeckley Funeral Home and Crematorium, Inc., 21 Chestnut Street, Mohnton.

A viewing was be held on Friday, June 21 from 7 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be private.

Betty Lue Schrader

Betty Lue Schrader, 80, formerly of Douglassville. Widow of the late Delbert L. “Pete” Schrader, passed away on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at Chestnut Knoll in Boyertown.

Born in Little Rock, Ark. on Sept. 17, 1932. She was a daughter of the late Zoe (Lenz) and James W. Tate Sr.

She was employed for many years working as a Keypunch Operator and a Floral Designer.

She is survived by her daughters Deborah wife of Gordon Hollowbush of Barto and Melanie wife of Kenneth Ertman of Boyertown. Brother, James “Jack” Tate Jr. husband of Sandra of LaGrange, Ga. Her grandchildren, Bruce husband of Elizabeth Hollowbush of Boyertown, Stephanie wife of Eric Wiediger of Collegeville and Beth Ertman Barnes of Washington, DC. Step Grandchildren, Greg Hollowbush, Diane Cynova in Gilbertsville. Step Great Grandchildren, Lance and Justin Cynova and Anthony Rutkowski. Betty is also survived by her sister in laws; Betty in OK and Alice in KS along with several nieces, nephews and their families.

Donald R. Good

Donald R. “Goodie” Good, 86, of Muhlenberg Twp,

passed away at home on Saturday, June 15, 2013. He was the companion of Lucy (Daub) Shomo. The couple had been together for over 20 years.

Born in Hyde Park on December 21, 1926, he was a son of the late Ralph and Lulu M. (Becker) Good.

Goodie was a U.S. Army veteran and served from 1945 to 1947. He then took over the family floral business, then known as Retail Floral Shop, and changed the name to Goodie the Florist. He enjoyed being a Muhlenberg Twp. crossing guard for 54 years. At the same time, he was also an umpire for amateur and pro baseball teams. He started in 1958 and never really did retire from it. He loved everything that had to do with baseball. He was also an avid fisher and enjoyed country music.

He was a member of the Goodwill (Hyde Park) Fire Co., Temple Fire Co. and the Berks County Umpires Association.

In addition to his companion, Lucy, Goodie is survived by three daughters, Pamela and her husband, Randy Ulrich of Mohnton, Vicky and her husband, David Astheimer of Fredrick, MD, and Cynthia Sunday of Hamburg; a stepson, Darrell Wenrich; six grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Goodie is predeceased by his wife, Violet M. (Brenner) Good and a brother, Franklin Good.

A graveside service was held at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2013 in Forest Hills Memorial Park, 391 W. Neversink Rd., Reading. Family and friends were received from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Thursday in Auman’s Inc. Funeral Home, 390 W. Neversink Rd., Reading. The funeral procession formed at the Auman’s Inc. Funeral Home. Madeline Irene (Yeakley) Kauffman

Madeline Irene (Yeakley) Kauffman, 81 of Shillington died of natural causes in Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest Friday, June 21, 2013. She was born in Reading and was the daughter of the late Ray Russell and Irene (Burrell) Yeakley.

She was a homemaker for most her life. She was a pianist for Act 1 Productions, Berks County for 15 years. She was also pianist at Reading Wesleyan Church, Reading for many years as well as other churches.

She was predeceased by her husband, Edwin R. Kauffman on January 21st, 2004. She was also predeceased by two siblings Joan Donato, and Ray Yeakley.

Madeline is survived by two sons, Michael R. husband of Jacquelyn Kauffman of Wyomissing and Scott M. Kauffman of Shillington; two daughters, Natalie L. Pingitore wife of Gregory of Sinking Spring and Debra I. wife of Rodney Wahl of Perry Township.

Additional survivors include sisters, June wife of Vincent Drogo of Laureldale, Rae Catherine wife of Joseph Wein of Wyomissing, Dorothy widow of Harry Freeman of Bethel, Helen wife of Terry Kelichner of Mohrsville and a brother, Robert Yeakley of Bethel. Madeline is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 25 at 10 a.m. from Zion’s Church, Windsor Castle with Pastor Rand Bond officiating. A viewing was held in the church from 9 to 10 a.m. Burial in Berks County Memorial Gardens.

Jean P. (Schwartz) Wade

Jean P. (Schwartz) Wade, 85, of Shillington, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away Wednesday June 19th. She was the daughter of the late Harry L. and Helen E. (Keim) Schwartz.

Born in Reading, she was a graduate of Reading High School and earned a BS degree in Biology from Albright College where she was a member of the Pi Alpha Tau sorority, president of the Women’s Athletic Assoc. and played field hockey, basketball and softball. She received her Medical Technologist certification at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia and a Master’s degree in Education from Kutztown State College. She worked as the laboratory supervisor at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Reading before becoming the Program Director for the School of Medical Technology for St. Joseph’s Hospital, retiring in 1991.

She was a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor for many years teaching swimming at RACC and Albright well into her 70s. She loved teaching swimming to children as well as adults and offered assistance to anyone who asked. Jean was an avid racquetball, volleyball and table tennis player and received awards at the Senior Games for swimming and racquetball. She was a member of the Berks Mineralogy Society and Albright College 50 Plus Club.

She loved to write poetry and short stories and had won awards in local competitions.

Jean is survived by four children: S. Jeffery Wade husband of Mary Kay (Szymborski) Wade, Leesport; Tracy H. (Wade) Gehris wife of Ron Gehris, Mohrsville; Patricia J. (Wade) Corcoran, Shillington with whom she resided and Victoria A. (Wade) Zimmerman, wife of Brian K. Zimmerman, Mohrsville.

Additionally, she is survived by seven grandchildren: Melissa L. (Rhoads) Ordway, Jennifer M. (Rhoads) Kaminski, Timothy J. Wade, Kylie K. Corcoran, Quinn C. Corcoran, Aubrey R. Zimmerman and Amber M. Zimmerman. There are four great-grandchildren: Liam D. Orday, Joshua C. Kaminski, Landon E. Ordway and Andrew R. Kaminski. She is predeceased by a granddaughter Lisa M. Wade and a brother Harry D. Schwartz.
