Two Boyertown area soccer players recently travelled to the University of Rhode Island to compete in the Prestigious Region 1 Youth Soccer Championships. Leon Maric and Erik Recke played for the Penn Fusion SoccerAcademy ’98 boys’ team that won the Eastern Pa. State Championship to advance to the Regionals.
They advanced to the semifinals by beating the Western Pa. champs, Century United, and Massachusetts champs, Scorpions FC.
In the semifinals, they beat Stronghold FC of New Jersey, 2-1. Then in the finals, the team met up with the Virginia State champs, Loudoun FC. Penn Fusion dominated from the opening whistle and went on to win, 5-0.
They next travel to Overland Park, Kansas for the National Championships where they will face the winners of the other three regions, Pateadores of California, Michigan Wolves, and Solar Chelsea FC of Texas.
The 2013 US Youth Soccer National Championship Series is the country’s most prestigious national youth soccer tournament. The event provides over 185,000 players from US Youth Soccer’s 55 state associations, the opportunity to showcase their soccer skills against the best competition in the nation while emphasizing teamwork, discipline and fair play.
