A head-shaving event isn’t much without head-shavers.
Every summer, for the past 8 years, Rita’s Water Ice of Boyertown has been shaving heads to benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand.
This event gathers friends, family and the community together for one common cause: to fight against childhood cancer. Individuals volunteer to shave or cut their hair in honor of those who are fighting and in memory of those who have fought. A percentage of proceeds goes to the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to finding a cure for children with cancer.
Alongside those who continue to make this event possible, there’s a group whose hands have remained steadfast behind the shavers throughout the years—the staff at Beauty By Design.
Five years ago, Christy States decided to pick up where another salon had left off. States, owner of Beauty By Design, remembers when the Gehman family came into her salon for their first head-shaving years ago. Since then, States says she has been good friends with the Gehmans.
When she saw the chance to assist with Rita’s Head-Shaving Event, she took it and her staff didn’t hesitate to follow.
“All of the girls donate their time; to see them and the community grow together is really special,” says States. “Bringing inner beauty out is what we believe. I’m so proud of the girls here.” Currently the staff at Beauty By Design is in a competition of growing their hair out in order to donate it.
States, a Barto native and a graduate of Boyertown Area High School, believes in being local and staying local.
“I don’t think there’s anyone that isn’t affected in one way or another,” said States. “It’s important for the community to come together and to keep fighting for the future. We’ll absolutely keep doing it until we’re asked not to.” She noted how surprised she was to learn that Alex’s Lemonade Stand is a national cause based out of Wynnewood, Pa.
Twenty-five people shaved their heads at Rita’s Water Ice on Sunday, June 30.
According to States, her favorite part about assisting in such an event is meeting the people and hearing their heartfelt stories. She also attends Relay For Life to cut hair and support Relay as a whole.
Also, in order to raise breast cancer awareness, the salon offers pink hair extensions throughout the month of October. On Saturday, Aug. 17, the salon will be celebrating a 2nd Annual Birthday Celebration at their new location in Gilbertsville from 1 to 3 p.m. The public is invited.
So far this year the salon has raised more than $600 for the American Cancer Society through their various efforts.
