Group presents Oley School Board with grant in honor of late superintendent

The Boyertown-Oley Retired School Employees Association recently presented the Oley School Board with a grant in honor of a former superintendent.

Barry Kulakowsky and Heidi Pennypacker presented the board with a $500 check in the name of the late Robert J. Lesko. Kulakowsky said the grant had been named the Robert Lesko Memorial Library Grant.

“It is to be used to purchase materials for the district’s library since that was a very special thing to Robert Lesko,” Kulakowsky said. Board president Robert Heckman accepted the check on behalf of the board at the meeting held Sept. 11.

Heckman said he was reminded of a conversation he and Lesko had when the district’s middle school was being constructed. “Robert said the library was the cornerstone of the building, the most important part,” Heckman said. “This could not be any more important.”

Lesko was a 36-year employee of the Oley Valley School District, serving as superintendent from 1984 until 1995. Upon his retirement, Lesko continued to serve in various capacities within the district and the Oley Valley community.

Lesko also served as past president and vice president of the retired school employees’ association, which is comprised of 450 retired employees from the Boyertown and Oley Valley school districts.

Kulakowsky and Pennypacker told the board that Lesko initiated the idea of the grant several years ago as a way to give back to the school districts. The grant is alternately given between the two districts.
