There were concerns from the board regarding the wording of the resolution, which authorizes the sale to the highest bidder but does not set a minimum bid.

"I'm a little bit reluctant to authorize a sale where we don't have a purchase price or a better idea of what the purchase price is going to be," said Board Vice President Randy Burch.

<![CDATA[Teams 'cruise for a cure' at Relay for Life of Central Berks]]> Lynne Ruffner, the Event Head for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Central Berks, held at the Schuylkill Valley School District stadium, opened the event on Friday, May 15 on an emotional note by thanking "team captains and participants for creating a world with more birthdays."

Ruffner confirmed that 30 teams were involved in the Relay for Life and that the Relay was celebrating its 30 anniversary this year.

The district's 30 cafeteria workers may not know before June 9 if they will have jobs when the new school year starts in September.

<![CDATA[Incumbents survive crowded Boyertown School Board race]]> All of the incumbent Boyertown Area School Board incumbents will head onto the general election this fall. Only one challenger is moving forward.

All candidates for the school board cross-filed in both the Republican and Democratic primaries.

In Region 1, incumbent Christine Neiman will likely keep her seat, besting challenger Wendy Moyer Drabick in both the Democratic and Republican races.

<![CDATA[Father and son rescued from banks of Schuylkill in Douglass (Berks) Township]]> A father and son who went kayaking in the Schuylkill River Sunday night, May 17, were rescued by firemen after grappling with a strong current.

Amity Fire Chief Mike Zomolsky explained that the men were stranded along the river bank and because of a swift current they couldn't make it back upstream.

She recently signed her letter-of-intent to run cross country and track for the Fighting Scots.

<![CDATA[BASEBALL: Governor Mifflin defeats Daniel Boone for Berks League championship]]> When the Berks County League baseball season began, the Governor Mifflin Mustangs were the odds on favorites to win the championship. With that kind of pressure on their backs, the Mustangs only went 7-3 in the regular season and finished in second place behind Exeter in Division 1. But they got hot when it mattered, winning all three playoff games, including a 3-1 victory over Daniel Boone in the championship game on May 13 at First Energy Stadium in Reading, to capture the program's first league title since 2011.

<![CDATA[Hamburg Area School District directors approve proposed final budget]]> Hamburg Area School Directors voted, 6-0, on May 18 to approve a $39.27 million proposed final budget for the 2015-16 school year.

The proposed final budget includes a one percent tax increase or a .25 mill rate increase.

Millage rates would increase to 26.46 from 26.21. The tax bill for a property assessed at $100,000 would be $2,646, an increase of $25.

Occasionally, though, travelers and visitors recorded details of their visits which are useful to historians. Fortunately one visitor, with the unlikely name of Theophile Cazenove, kept a brief journal which is densely rich with specific details and solid facts about what he found here in 1794.
