Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby the other day. I always loved the novel (and the recent film adaptation), in part because I grew up on Long Island where the story takes place. I know firsthand that the dichotomy of "old" money versus "new" that is so adeptly depicted is neither fictitious nor limited to the 1920s era.

<![CDATA[Knowles' resolution to explore statewide elder abuse task force effort passes House]]> The House voted in favor of a resolution sponsored by Rep. Jerry Knowles (R-Berks/Schuylkill) calling for a study of Pennsylvania's existing network of elder abuse task forces and to assess the feasibility of expanding the network across the state, on Sept. 24.

"Pennsylvania has the fourth highest percentage of residents age 65 and older, only behind Florida, Maine and West Virginia; and sadly, elder abuse is on the rise in Pennsylvania and across the nation," Knowles explained.

<![CDATA[Kutztown University students bring home Mid Atlantic Emmy awards]]> Emmanuel Metayer, of Bernville, was awarded a Mid Atlantic regional Emmy award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) Sept. 20 at a ceremony in Philadelphia.

Students from the Kutztown University Department of Electronic Media won two Mid Atlantic regional Emmy awards at the ceremony.

<![CDATA[Community comes together to 'Keep Hamburg Beautiful']]> Residents of Hamburg gathered together on Saturday, Sept. 27 for the third Keep Hamburg Beautiful, a community-wide effort to clean up the town's streets, parks and lots.

Starting at 9 a.m., volunteers gathered at the Tot Lot on Primrose Alley to suit up with orange vests, gloves, trash bags and Walkie-Talkies.

<![CDATA[Hamburg Superintendent updates directors on Perry Elementary Center]]> Perry Elementary Center Dedicated to Esther H. Ludwig should be completed by late October or early November, Superintendent Steven Keifer told school directors on Sept. 22.

"Students and teachers are enjoying the new school," Keifer said.

Some of the areas still being worked on include: installation of a wooden floor in the gymnasium, flooring on the stage in the auditorium, roofing work and landscaping, according to Keifer.

The homecoming game was a success: the Hawks won against the Kutztown Cougars with a final score of 34-6. Junior Nick Kuhn ran the ball to score once and threw two touchdown passes to juniors Jared Lesher and Aaron Nelson.

<![CDATA[Boyertown mayor takes on ALS Challenge with Walnut Woods' staff, residents]]> With the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge sweeping across communities as summertime concludes, one local group decided to take on the challenge while inviting others to do so if they wished. Staff at Walnut Woods Independent Senior Living Community organized the event, inviting residents to participate.

According the Jessica Gumbert, enrichment coordinator for Walnut Woods, the ice was replaced with confetti for some of the residents.

As last year, the Walk has moved to Saturday as part of Boyertown's Turning Leaf Fall Festival running from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. where all ages will find games, music, crafters, food and many other things to do.
