<![CDATA[Kutztown Rotary Club announces winners of 4-Way Contest]]> Kutztown Rotary Club named Ayla Blatt, a tenth grader from Kutztown Area High School, winner of its annual 4-way speech contest at the Kutztown Tavern March 26. Others honored were 10th grader Tom Velik, of KAHS as runner up and Krista Kunkle, an eleventh grader from KAHS as third place.

In the contest, students were tasked to develop and deliver a five to seven minute persuasive speech on the subject of their choice within the framework for the Rotary 4-way test.

<![CDATA[Ribbons of Respect pinned up throughout Berks to support police]]> Since March 20, blue ribbons have been decorating Berks County, colorfully supporting police officers.

"Ribbons of Respect," a month-long campaign created by Tina Shenk, has blossomed into a way for community members to appreciate local policemen. The idea was born when Shenk thought law enforcement could use a boost in the midst of so much negativity.

<![CDATA[Meet Dude, a black lab ready for a forever home]]> Hey ya'll. I came into the ARL as a stray. Nobody knew if I had a name so my foster mommy kept calling me by "Hey Dude" or "Come here Dude." I kinda liked it and started to respond to the name Dude so here I am. My names Dude (#9388).

The vets think I'm around 10 years old but I don't feel or act like it.

<![CDATA[Fire destroys Amity home that once housed church]]> A two-alarm fire that destroyed a home on the 300 block of Monocacy Creek Road kept fire crews busy Wednesday, April 8, as they worked to fight the blaze in dreary conditions.

No one was inside when the fire started and no injuries were reported.

At around 2 p.m. Wednesday, multiple crews responded to a fire that consumed a home just houses away from Monocacy Elementary Center.

<![CDATA[Colorful mural on business facade brightens Bernville Main Street]]> Tulpehocken and Wilson high school students brought color and cheer to downtown Bernville through creation of a mural on Main Street, culminating on April 4 with a community event.

Horizons Child Care at 100 N. Main Street, Bernville, celebrated the arts and the community with the painting of a mural spanning the entirety of its façade.

<![CDATA[Hamburg Area School Directors hold special meeting, reject fact finder's teacher contract proposal]]> Hamburg Area School District teachers have been without a contract since July and after a special meeting of the district's school directors on April 7 the situation does not appear likely to change in the near future.

School directors voted, 6-0-1, to reject a fact finder's contract proposal during the brief meeting with about 45 teachers present.

<![CDATA[Meet Boyertown's 2015 Student of the Year, Abby Jaeger]]> For years, Abby Jaeger has been giving back to her community, throwing herself into the numerous groups for which she is involved.

Jaeger has always been too busy to recognize the difference she is making in the lives of others, her "can-do" attitude and spirit of giving coming naturally. But many have taken notice, particularly her teachers at Boyertown Senior High, and thanks to her unyielding willingness to participate and give back, Jaeger is being recognized as this year's Boyertown Student of the Year.

<![CDATA[Exeter Community Band to perform Jazz Fest Concert at Hopewell Furnace to celebrate Civilian Conservation Corps]]> The National Park Service (NPS) will commemorate the 82nd birthday of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) with a Jazz Concert performed by the Exeter Community Band at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 19, at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site (NHS).

The event is free and open to the public. This concert is part of the nationally renowned Berks Jazz Fest that runs from April 10 to April 19.
