BOB, a Battle of the Bands, was held Saturday at the Brandywine Heights High School.

The Brandywine Heights Community Task Force and Kutztown Strong teamed to engage students in activities in an effort to battle substance abuse.

Chickens of yesteryear were perhaps not the calm, fat hens of today, but tended rather to be thin, tough, rangy and somewhat wild.

Chickens, "Hinkel" in the dialect, were found not only on farms but also in many village and town backyards.

She picked me up and took me inside so my kittens would not be born out in the cold.

<![CDATA[Brandywine alum graduates basic training]]> Air Force Guard Airman 1st Class Dennis J. Parks graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.

Susan Gallagher, chief naturalist, and Franklin Klock II, naturalist, from the Carbon County Environmental Education Center, brought Rennie the bald eagle and Miss Charles, or also known as "Goldie," the golden eagle for an educational presentation.

Recently, freshman Congressman Ryan Costello (PA-06) spent the afternoon at the Douglass Township farm to tout the CIDER Act, bipartisan legislation that was reintroduced in the 114th Congress to loosen regulations and lessen the tax burden on selling hard cider.

<![CDATA[Mertztown man threatens woman with gun in domestic incident]]> On Aug. 26 at 3:41 a.m., State Police from the Reading station were called to a domestic disturbance on Sally Ann Furnace Road in Rockland Township.

Through a series of interviews, police learned that William James Spannuth, 56, of Mertztown, awoke at 3 a.m. with pain caused by a pre-existing medical condition.

<![CDATA[20-year-old female robbed at gunpoint in Lyons]]> The Pennsylvania State Police of Reading responded to a robbery at gunpoint that occurred on Aug. 28 in the Lyons Borough.

At 4:50 a.m., the 20-year-old female victim was walking to work on Ash Street, just north of State Street. The suspect, a male wearing all black and a black ski mask, pulled out a handgun and demanded the victim's money.
