Crowned by Ryan Cortazzo and Autumn Noll, Fleetwood’s 2011 Homecoming king and queen, were Sammy Cabrera and Maureen McGarry, King and Queen for 2012.
Cabrera, one of the Homecoming varsity players, has plans on pursuing a career as a physician’s assistant. McGarry is a member of the National Honor Society, Relay for Life, Student Council, Future Business Leaders of America, and chorus. She is also a member on the soccer and basketball teams as well.
The Fleetwood School District’s Homecoming celebration began with its annual parade through town and continued into Friday night with a bonfire and rallying party for Saturday’s game and crowning of this year’s HomecomingKing and Queen.
The parade featured floats from each of the classes and various clubs as well as the royal nominees.
‘It’s finally real to me now that this is my senior Homecoming,’ said Carly Hawkins, senior, co-president of Student Council and nominee for Queen. ‘It’s pretty awesome; most of my friends are on the court as well.’
Hawkins was looking forward to seeing everyone come out including the town. Homecoming was a lot more involved this year with the entire community. Fleetwood made it a weekend long fall festival highlighting the school’s Homecoming.
‘An event like this for Homecoming is what community is all about,’ said Lynae Menet, Fleetwood.
Joanne Broome said the parade is bigger this year not only because of Homecoming, but because the borough got involved too.
‘It’s neat to see the kids getting involved in the community and the community getting involved with the kids,’ said Elizabeth Roerig, seventh grade math teacher.
Roerig said there has been more involvement within the past couple of years between community and school. She said St. Paul’s Lutheran Church has an Overtime Program for after football games. The Fleetwood High School kids are invited to the church’s Social Hall to listen to a band or DJ for free. Drinks and pizza are provided as well. The idea was to have a safe place to go once the game was done. She said it was a fairly new program that has already been expanded to include basketball games.
‘This is our last year,’ said Chelsey Schweitzer, senior, as she and her class mates got their float ready for the parade. ‘It was a lot harder this year because we picked Senior Superlatives so we had to be the best and make it look the best.’
The sign on the senior float read, Su-per-la-tive adjective. 1. Of the highest kind, quality, or order; surpassing all else or others; supreme, extreme: superlative seniors.
‘To me it’s like saying all these seniors did a good job and these are the guys who are representing Fleetwood; they represent the youth of Fleetwood,’ said Kyle Jurgensen, 12.
