Set to open in 2013, Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster County will be the nation’s largest indoor sports complex. Yet before their door even open they are creating competition by presenting kids to showcase their love of art and sports by creating and designing the Spooky Nook Sports mascot.
“We want to try to get the whole community involved in the process,” Sales and Marketing Director Ben Halvorsen said. “We realize that not everyone loves sports, and that’s okay. We are going to offer so much more than just sports, so we thought what better way to get local residents involved than by asking them to design a mascot for us.”
Krissy Wrobel, a marketing assistant with the ultimate multi-million dollar arena, said, “We are located on Spooky Nook Rd. in Manheim, Lancaster County. This is the former site of one of the old Armstrong buildings. We are currently in the process of renovating the old building that has sat vacant for many years. With 60 acres of indoor and outdoor entertainment and adventure for the whole family, we will be the largest sports facility in the country.”
The mascot contest is accepting entries from Kindergarten aged children up to high school seniors, with the goal being to create a mascot that will emit the dynamic feeling of the complex. Mascots should be of original design, but must include the “eyes” of the Nook Sports logo. In addition, each entry must include a name for his/her mascot.
“We have been receiving all sorts of designs… …Lions, and tigers and bears, Oh My,” Wrobel joked, her Wizard of Oz quote hinting at the carefree outlook of Spooky Nook’s staff.
Wrobel is a graduate of Reading Central Catholic High School and Seton Hall in New Jersey. A former high school sports player she beams with enthusiasm about her love of the job. With a strong affinity for her hometown and the surrounding area, she is hoping for a lot of local entries.
Spooky Nook Sports will select one winner from all eligible entries and award the winner with a prize package consisting of a Nook Sports T-shirt and a free day pass to explore the sports complex, including all it has to offer.
Children can explore the vast arcade and the moon bounce, while the more adventurous at heart can challenge themselves with activities like ropes courses, rock climbing, bouldering, zip lines and a mud run obstacle course. In addition, they have a fully-equipped fitness center with classes such as aerobics, zumba, spin and more. Childcare will also be available.
“You can fit nine football fields inside the building, and the mezzanine level with the all the spectator viewing area only adds to its size,” Wrobel said. “We are already sponsoring our own travel teams. In fact, baseball, softball and volleyball are already in place. To try out for a team, you can go to www.nooksports.com.”
Spooky Nook Sports will feature state-of-the-art facilities with a wide variety of indoor and outdoor fields and courts as it will host local, regional and national tournaments and leagues. Yet it will be so much more than just a place for competition for teams.
“We will host conventions, trade shows and meetings. Not only will it be a place for events, but it will simply be a place for everyone to come and hang out,” Wrobel continued. “It will be a great place to unwind and meet friends, or do some fun activities with those friends. Other components include a sporting goods store and an extensive food court including healthy options.”
