Firefly Bookstore in Kutztown will be hosting a reception for local artist Jake Bullock as he introduces his selection of works entitled “Masks.”
The reception will be held at the store on Nov. 9 from 5 to 8 p.m.
The work will be available for viewing through the month of November.
Bullock’s work confronts the post-modernist movement still prevalent in the art world today. As he describes his view,“I chose to put ‘artist’ in quotations because I despise the pretentiousness of the modern art world. My generation is one of apathy growing up in a world that often lacks common sense, justice, peace, and other things that make living life an enjoyable experience.”
“Masks” strongly follows many the similar ideas identified as Remodernism, described in a 2000 manifesto as attempting to introduce a period of new spirituality into art, culture and society to replace postmodernism, which is thought of as cynical and spiritually bankrupt.
Bullock describes his own work as “Recessionism”, a term he created to describe his passion for using found objects, thrown away canvas, and other such “trash” to create mixed media paintings that can elicit an emotion from the viewer.
“I am both fascinated and disgusted by and strive to look through these masks and try to see the real person underneath...What comes out of me is almost always unplanned, raw emotion strewn over whatever object is in front of me.”
The reception for Bullock will be held at Firefly Bookstore located at230 West Main Street in Kutztown. For more information contact Firefly at 484-648-2712. Visit www.fireflybookstore.com.
