Mertztown 10-year-old Zackary Moyer donateda check from his winning essay on Patriotism to Brandywine Community Library.
Moyer has been visiting the library since he was three years old. Recently, he won a national American Legion competition for his essay on Patriotism. The Berks County Council of the American Legion had more than 100 essays in 3rd to 12th grade enter the contest with this year’s topic “How can I encourage my friends to show pride in being an American.”
Moyer won local, county, state, and the national prize of the American Legion essay contest.
Instead of spending the money on video games, which he originally planned, Zack read Brandywine Community Library’s Facebook post regarding financial troubles and possible closure in 2014. He decided to donate the entire $50 check to the library.
Zack said when he read the article on his Mom’s Facebook page, he thought, “I can’t live without the library.”
Zack and his family are frequent patrons at the library. He has been attending the Summer Reading programs and participating in the summer reading club for years.
His favorite books have been the Star Wars series, “Wolven, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Captain Underpants.”
We are very grateful to Zack for donating such a large sum to the library, and will use the money to expand our children’s books.
