New faces were in the area this week to raise money for a local cause.
The Amazing Race came to Zern’s Flea market Saturday, Dec. 8, to raise money for the Boyertown YMCA annual support campaign.
Mike Smith, owner of Deal Me in Games, invited personal friend Rachel Johnston and her Amazing Race partner Katie Seamum, top winners of season 17, to participate in the themed fundraiser.
Three teams of two had only an hour to race around Zern’s completing tasks and collecting donations. From devouring hot and spicy foods to learning and performing magic tricks for shoppers the events had teams running from one end of Zern’s to the other, all in the name of charity.
Fans of the Amazing Race were treated to a meet and greet, coinciding with an autograph signing, with the ladies made famous by the show. In total the group was able to raise 106 dollars in only one hour.
With a slight advantage from past experience at this sort of thing, it comes as no shock to find Johnston and Seamum won-but the real winners are those that are helped by the YMCA.
Throughout the year many seek out the YMCA for childcare and after school programs, in addition to a wealth of other services. Fundraising makes much of this possible.
For young people in the area, finding fun things to do can be a challenge. It is the hope of Smith and the YMCA that places like the Y and Deal Me in Games can offer Boyertown youth safe environments to hang out and socialize.
Another step in that process of bringing the community together has Smith and Zern’s owner Bobbi Gail Lipton working together to offer local artists a venue to display and sell their work.
