Fleetwood High School has established a Sports Hall of Fame this year and will induct 20 inaugural members on Dec. 27. There will be a social at 5 p.m. in the school cafeteria with presentations and speeches at that time. The group will also be introduced between the first and second games of the Fleetwood Tiger Classic.

The group includes highly successful coaches and athletes who excelled in a variety of sports.

As boys’ soccer coach, Ray Buss won 14 Berks titles, nine district titles, and two state titles. He was named Berks Coach of the Year nine times, PIAA Coach of the Year, and National Secondary Coach of the Year in 1980. Buss coached seven First Team All-American soccer players who will also be induced into the Hall, including: Troy Snyder, Doug Moyer, Jerry Moyer, Ken Mayer, Glenn Mayer, Brent Buss and Keith Schlegel. These players set several national, state, district, county and school records.

Arlan Burkert was a first team All-State player on the 1957 state championship basketball team. He set several school records for scoring and rebounding. He was also All-County in soccer.

Dr. Richard Kleppinger was on the county championship basketball team in 1942 and led the county in scoring that year. He also starred on the soccer and baseball teams.

Paul Price was first team All-Berks in soccer, basketball and baseball in 1954. He was drafted by the Phillies and starred for the World Champion Sunners softball team.

Donna Werner was an All-Berks selection 11 times. She starred in field hockey, basketball and softball. She still holds many school scoring and rebounding records in basketball.

Jeff Batturs was an All-County athlete in basketball, soccer and baseball in 1983. In basketball he was also an All-State selection on the PIAA Eastern Finalist team in 1983.

John Stengele coached the 1957 state championship team and set the school record for most wins. He also coached the baseball team to a county championship in 1953.

Jill Henne was All-Berks selection in borth basketball and track. She led the county in scoring twice, and scored 50 points in a game. She set school and Berks records in the high jump and triple jump.

Jason Koehler was an All-Berks selection in basketball, baseball and golf. He was Berks golf champion in 1993. In 1996, he was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays.

Jodie Swavely was All-State in softball in 2001 and All-Berks in field hockey. She still holds many pitchng records at Fleetwood and Shippensburg University.

Garry Koch was All-Berks first team in baseball and soccer. He was the catcher on the 1970 Berks championship team. He was a Division 1 first team baseball all-star at Penn State.

Rick Price was the Berks golf champion in 1984 and made the professional golf tour in 1999.

Vicki Scheidt was a star athlete and made All-Berks in field hockey, basketball and softball.
