Daniel Boone Boys’ Basketball The Daniel Boone High boys’ basketball team finished in fourth place at the Downingtown East Tournament held Dec. 26 and 27. The Blazers are 4-5 overall this season.
The Blazers began the tournament by taking on host Downingtown East. Thanks in part to a big fourth quarter, Downingtown East defeated Daniel Boone, 61-58.
The two teams played to a 26-26 tied after one quarter, before the Blazers outscored their hosts in the third quarter, 23-18. But Downingtown would not be denied as they pulled off the fourth quarter comeback, outscoring the locals, 17-9.
Kenny Worthington had a big game for the Blazers, scoring 32 points. Daniel Downs scored 12 points while Jullian Gerhart and Pop Lacey each had four points.
The loss sent the Blazers to the consolation game on Dec. 27 where they took on West Chester East. The game was tight but it was West Chester East that came out on top, 50-45.
West Chester held a one point halftime lead, they outscored the Blazers in the third quarter, 17-10. The Blazers cut into the lead in the fourth quarter, but were unable to complete the comeback. Worthington led the way once again for Daniel Boone with 11 points. Lacey scored 10 points and Downs scored eight. Gerhart, Steven Sievers and Xavier Smith each scored four points.
Girls’ Basketball The Daniel Boone High School girls’ basketball team lost a pair of games at the Spring-Ford Holiday Tournament held Dec. 27 and 28. The Lady Blazers are 3-6 overall this season.
Daniel Boone opened the tournament with a game against Great Valley. The Patriots’ offense was on target throughout the game, holding a 32-31 halftime lead. Great Valley outscored the Blazers in the third quarter, 15-9, and the fourth, 18-7.
Rebecca Mickletz led the Lady Blazers with 19 points, while Stephanie Sievers scored 15 and Kelly Howiszak added six.
The loss sent Daniel Boone to the consolation round on Dec. 28 where they took on Parkland. The Trojans proved to be too much for the Lady Blazers as Parkland won the game, 63-16.
Parkland took control of the game early, grabbing a 29-3 lead after one quarter. By halftime, the lead was up to 26 points, 33-7.
Shelby Vanderslice led the Daniel Boone offense with seven points in the contest. Sievers netted five and Dahlia Wilson had three.
Exeter Boys’ Basketball The Exeter High boys’ basketball team improved to 9-0 overall this season after winning the Wyomissing Holiday Tournament Dec. 27 and 28.
The Eagles began the tournament with a game against Oxford. The game went into overtime but it was Exeter that came out on top, 53-50.
With Exeter up by one at halftime, 27-26, Oxford shutout the Eagles in the third quarter, 8-0. But Exeter came back, outscoring Oxford in the fourth quarter, 18-11, then winning the overtime period, 8-5.
Justin Trojanowski led the Exeter offense with 13 points in the game. Brett Gilbert netted 12 while Joe Beddall and Bryan Stinson each had seven points and Derek Stump scored six.
On Dec. 28, Exeter advanced on to the championship match where they took on Schuylkill Valley. This one went a little easier for Exeter as they defeated the Panthers, 55-32.
Exeter jumped out to a 13-9 lead after one quarter, then expanded the advantage to seven by halftime, 27-20. The Eagles opened things up in the second half, outscoring Schuylkill Valley in the third quarter, 16-8, and the fourth, 12-6.
Stump and Stinson led the balanced Exeter scoring attack with 10 points each in the game. Michal Menet and Kris Vaden each scored eight points and Trojanowski had seven. Beddall and Gilbert each scored six points.
Trojanowski was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and joined teammate Beddall on the All-Tournament team.
Girls’ Basketball The Exeter High School girls’ basketball team participated in the Spartan Holiday Tournament at Wyomissing High School where they captured third place after losing in the first round and winning the consolation game. The Lady Eagles are 3-6 overall this season.
In the opening round, Exeter took on Conestoga Valley. This was a close game throughout but it was Conestoga Valley that came out on top, 39-37.
The Buckskins jumped out to an 11-5 lead after one quarter. Exeter cut the lead in half by halftime, 17-4. The two teams fought back and fourth throughout the second half but Exeter could not come up with the victory.
Jennifer Eck led the Exeter offense with nine points in the game, while Abby Mengel scored eight and Janai Cintron added seven. Aly Snyder scored four points.
The loss sent the Lady Eagles to the consolation game against Pottstown on Dec. 28. This time things went much better for the locals as Exeter defeated the Lady Trojans, 63-39.
Exeter took control of the game quickly, jumping out to a 17-7 lead after one quarter, The Eagles increased the advantage to 14 by halftime, 32-18, then put the game away in the third quarter when they outscored Pottstown, 22-11.
Eck was the high scorer once again for Exeter with 16 points in the game. Katye Johnson scored 14 points while Snyder netted 11 and Cintron added nine. Mengel chipped in with sevne points.
Wrestling The Exeter High School wrestling team captured 14th place in the 25-team Buckskin Classic held in Leola on Dec. 29.
The Eagles were led by James Moran who finished in second place in the 182 pound weight class. Alex Kramer (145) finished in fifth place , while Brett Kulp and Tristan Watts each took seventh place. Scott Schaeffer finished in eighth place.
Boys’ Bowling The Exeter High School boys’ bowling team fell to 9-3 in the Berks League after losing to Twin Valley on Jan. 2, 2-1.
Bobby Wike led the way for Exeter with a three-game series of 639. Austin Harak bowled a 583.
Exeter won the junior varsity match, 3-0.
Girls’ Bowling The Exeter High School girls’ bowling team was blanked by Twin Valley on Jan. 2, 3-0, and fell to 4-8 in the Berks League.
Courtney Mayer bowled a three-game series of 482 to lead the Lady Eagles, while Erin Murphy bowled a series of 475.
Governor Mifflin Boys’ Basketball
The Governor Mifflin High boys’ basketball team participated in the Bear Holiday Tournament in Boyertown on Dec. 27 and 28, where they finished in thrid place after losing their first game, and winning in the consolation round. The Mustangs are 2-6 overall this season.
In the opening round, Governor Mifflin took on Pennridge. Thanks in part to a strong second quarter, Pennridge defeated the Mustangs, 50-47.
Governor Mifflin jumped out to an 18-11 lead after one quarter, but the Rams fought back in the second quarter and tied the game by halftime, 27-27. The two teams battled it out in the close second half, but it was Pennridge that came out on top.
Trevon Wight led the way for the Governor Mifflin offense with 17 points in the game. Tommy DePaul scored 14 points while Austin Peters scored eight and Reid Hoff added six.
The loss sent the Mustangs to the consolation game on Dec. 28 where they took on Southern Lehigh. This was also a close game that needed an extra period to decide. The Mustangs outscored Southern Lehigh in the overtime period, 9-7, to earn the 68-66 victory.
Governor Mifflin jumped out to the 19-12 lead after one quarter. Southern Lehigh cut the lead to four by halftime, before Exeter outscored their opponents in the third quarter, 19-15, to take a 52-44 lead. But Southern Lehigh fought back in the fourth quarter to tie the game and send it into overtime.
Peters led the Governor Mifflin offense with 22 points in the game. DePaul was right behind him with 21 points and Hoff scored 14.
Girls’ Basketball The Governor Mifflin High girls’ basketball team participated in the Ephrata Holiday Tournament on Dec. 27 and 28, where they finished in thrid place after losing their first game, and winning in the consolation round. The Mustangs are 5-4 overall this season.
In the opening round, Governor Mifflin took on Lampeter-Strasburg. Thanks to a big second quarter, Lampeter-Strasburg defeated the Lady Mustangs, 67-48.
Lampeter held a slim 14-13 lead after one quarter, but expanded the lead to 14 by halftime when they outscored the Mustangs in the second quarter, 22-9. Mifflin was unable to recover from the deficit.
Rhianna Roulston led the Governor Mifflin offense with 13 points in the game. Megan McKay and Madison Koehler each scored 10 points while Melissa Martin netted nine and Kylie Herman had six.
The loss sent Mifflin to the consolation game on Dec. 28 where they took on Lancaster McCaskey. This time it was Governor Mifflin that used a big second quarter to defeat their opponent, 67-46.
McCaskey held a 17-14 lead after one quarter, but the Lady Mustangs outscored their opponenets in the second quarter, 29-12 to take a 43-29 halftime lead. Mifflin put the game away in the third quarter when they outscored McCaskey, 16-8.
Koehler led the way for Governor Mifflin with 19 points in the game. Victoria Conover scored 13 points, including a trio of three-pointers, and McKay netted 12. Martin scored seven while Carla Santarelli and Kylie Herman each had six points.
McKay was named to the All-Tournament team.
Boys’ Bowling The Governor Mifflin High School boys’ bowling team is 11-1 in the Berks League after the Mustangs defeated Muhlenberg on Jan. 2, 2-1. Jon Gottschall led the way for the Mustangs with a three-game series of 693. Nick Diggan bowled a 631 series and Tanny Delucia bowled a 624.
Governor Mifflin won the junior varsity match, 3-0.
Girls’ Bowling The Governor Mifflin High School girls’ bowling team fell to 5-7 in the Berks League after losing to Muhlenberg on Jan. 2, 3-0.
Nicole Stambaugh bowled a three-game series of 558 to lead the Lady Mustangs. Brianna Dreisbach bowled a 536.
Muhlenberg won the junior varsity match, 3-0.
