Tuesday, January 22, 2013

The work of artist and Boyertown Area School District art teacher Nancy Yurkovich was selected as Best in Show by one of the studio’s Black Bear supporters for a donation of $500.
The donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, selected the series that depicted local and national musicians for its energy and bold colors. The series of paintings was created live at concerts.
Studio B, Boyertown, celebrated its four-year anniversary with its fifth annual “Members and Friends Showing of Small-Priced Works,” and showcased a variety of work from over 60 local artists throughout the holiday season.
In addition to teaching ninth grade 3D work in Boyertown; ceramic hand building for adults and children at the Banana Factory in Bethlehem; arts and crafts at the Independent Space Gallery in Kutztown, Studio B in Boyertown, and Bear Creek Mountain Resort during ski season and festivals, Yurkovich runs a small business called Sunshine Art Studio that provides customized art lessons for all ages, face painting, murals and quality entertainment for parties and events. Her art work specializes in painting en plein air, ceramics, printmaking and mixed media.
Yurkovich holds her Bachelors in Art degree from Kutztown University and is finishing her Masters in Art Education at Kutztown University concentrating in Community-based Art Education.
Fiddler Joe by Barrie Maguire received the most votes for the studio’s annual People’s Choice award and was the 2012 winner of Studio B’s Best in Show. Maguire comes from a family of artists going back four generations and whose own art career includes work as an advertising designer, creative director for Hallmark Cards, writer of humor books, and op ed artist for the Philadelphia Inquirer.
His serious work as a painter began in 1998, after what he describes as “a magical first visit to Ireland.” He’s been painting the Irish people, animals, and green patchwork quilt countryside ever since. See his work at
Tied for the community’s second choice were Rebecca Rohrbach’s nostalgic piece titled Going Home, and an abstract, mixed media piece by Linda Elliott titled Isn’t She Lovely.
Yurkovich will be invited as feature artist in the studio’s 2013 December Members and Friends Small-priced Works exhibit. Maguire was the feature artist in the recent exhibit and has served as juror for the studio’s fifth annual signature exhibit The Farm which opened Friday, January 18, 2013 and runs until February 12, 2013.
