Rep. David Maloney (R-Berks) today announced on Tuesday, Jan. 15, that he has been appointed to serve on the House State Government, Commerce, Local Government, Game and Fisheries, and Children and Youth committees for the 2013-14 legislative session.
‘I look forward to addressing the difficult challenges that face Pennsylvania through my service on these committees,’ Maloney said. ‘I will continue to work on the challenges that unfunded mandates present to local governments, and to ensure local and county governments respect the rights of private property owners.’
The State Government Committee is responsible for reviewing legislation dealing with all aspects of state government, including proposed amendments to the Pennsylvania Constitution, statewide initiatives and referendums, legislative redistricting, election code reform, lobbyist disclosure, and campaign financing.
One of the more timely committees in the House given our nation’s challenging economy is the Commerce Committee, which is responsible for oversight of economic development and banking issues throughout the Commonwealth.
The Local Government Committee reviews bills dealing with the municipal codes by which local governments operate. In previous sessions, the Local Government Committee has considered legislation related to local government purchases, real estate assessment policies and a statewide pension plan for municipal police officers.
The Game and Fisheries Committee oversees the laws and regulations that impact fishing, hunting and boating across the Commonwealth. This committee also has oversight of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and the Game Commission, particularly with respect to oversight of the commission’s game management plans.
Responsibilities of the House Children and Youth Committee include interacting with the Health, Human Services and Judiciary committees in dealing with issues targeted to the 18-year-old and under population. This committee will be especially important this session as the Legislature reviews recommendations from the state’s Task Force on Child Protection that was created in the wake of Penn State’s Jerry Sandusky scandal.
‘My committee assignments are sure to keep me busy in the coming months,’ Maloney said. ‘As we continue to face a challenging national economy, the General Assembly has a full plate in front of it and I am eager to help institute the policies that will help create the jobs Pennsylvanians need.’
The 130th Legislative District includes the boroughs of Birdsboro, Boyertown and Fleetwood, the townships of Amity, Colebrookdale, Douglass, Earl, Oley, Pike, Rockland, Ruscombmanor and Union, as well as portions of Exeter Township.
