It’s time! This is the week I answer your food and cooking questions, and share your favorite recipes.
Your Questions
How do I tell if a veggie or food is genetically modified? I want to avoid them, but am not sure how to spot GMOs.

GMOs or genetically modified organisms are food crops or animals that have been genetically altered in a laboratory for higher yield or resistance to pesticides and dieses. Yuck. According to the American Academy of Environmental Medicine, “GMOs can cause infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, faulty insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system”.
To avoid GM foods buy organic produce and look for the ‘Non GMO Project’ seal. The biggest GM food crops are corn, soybeans, canola, wheat, cottonseed, sugar beets, and papaya from China or Hawaii. Sugar beets are turned into sugar and used in many processed foods. If ‘sugar’ is listed in an ingredient list it is probably from GM sugar beets. ‘Pure cane sugar’ is ok.
Many dairy and beef cattle are injected with GM bovine growth hormones. Buy organic dairy and beef or look for labels stating No rbGH, rbST, or artificial hormones.

I like trying unusual fruit, and got a pomegranate at the grocery store. I’ve never had one before and don’t have a clue how to open it. Any tips?

When a pomegranate is perfectly ripe it will pop open. But since you will never find an open one at the grocery store, here is one way open a pomegranate:
1.On a cutting board, slice the top and bottom off the pomegranate.
2.Slice ¾ of the way down, and again crosswise.
3.Place the pomegranate into a small pot of hot water for a few minutes.
4.Move to a large bowl of cold water.
5.Break the pomegranate open under water. The pith will float, and the seeds will sink.
Your Recipes
Honey Sweet Stewed Prunes

Michael enjoys making this healthy dessert occasionally.
12 Dry, pitted prunes
1 1/2 cups Lemon flavored water (Such as Perrier Lemon or Lime Mineral Water)
2 Tbs. Honey
Using a sauce pan, place in all 3 ingredients. Simmer for 20-25 minutes or until prunes are tender. Stir occasionally. Makes 2 servings. Serve hot or cold. Note: If not using Perrier, lemon water can be made by adding 2 teaspoons of lemon juice to 1 1/2 cups of water
