Amity Primary Center’s Pink & Perky Relay for Life team is trying a different kind of event to raise funds for this year’s Daniel Boone Relay. The team is hosting a Comedy Night at the Historic State Theater in Boyertown on Saturday, Feb. 23.

Kathy McNeely is one of the 14 members of this year’s Pink & Perky team. She said she grew up going to the theater on weekends, and happened to be looking on the website one day recently to see what was playing. She said she saw the fundraising link on the website.

‘We went down to talk to them and we jumped at the idea of a comedy show,’ said McNeely. We thought it is something different; no-one was doing anything like this. We have a real fun group of women on the team. I think it’s going to turn out to be a fun event.’

The event will kick off at 7 p.m. on Feb. 23, featuring comics Andrea Mezvinsky and Pat McCool. Mezvinsky has been called ‘America’s Funniest Mom’ according to the Oprah Show, and McCool is known as the ‘Baby Boomer Southerner.’

‘Every cent that we take in goes directly to the cancer society,’ McNeely added. ‘It’s going to be a fun night. There isn’t always an opportunity to go to a local venue to see comedians. They are good comics coming here. And everyone who comes will be supporting a really good cause. ‘

Tickets for the show are $20. Advance tickets are available at the State Theater from 4 to 8 p.m. daily, by contacting any team member or by sending an e-mail to apcrelay@gmail.com.

The Pink & Perky relay team made its first appearance in the Daniel Boone relay last year, raising more than $6,300 and surpassing its original goal of $1,000. The goal for this year’s relay, scheduled for May 18 and 19 at the high school stadium is $8,000.

In addition to the comedy show, the team has been selling cookbooks, has sponsored bus trips, a Monster Mash dance for APC families and in April they team will repeat last year’s popular ‘Fancy Dance’ for APC families.

Additionally, the entire Daniel Boone Relay community will be holding a Vera Bradley Bingo event at the high school on Feb. 24, starting at Noon.
