Through My Kitchen Window – Your Questions, Your Recipes

This month, we’re taking a break from the Q&A to hear the culinary opinions of the 3rd grade class from Gehman’s Mennonite School. I think you will be surprised by some of the foods these 8-9 year olds enjoy.

My favorite food is breaded shrimp. I like breaded shrimp because we don’t have it a lot and it is very delicious. - Samantha

My favorite food is pizza. You can get different kinds of it. I like pepperoni, cheese, mushroom, meat lover’s, or filled pizza. I like crazy crust because of its cheese. – Asia

I like steak because I like the flavor. – Carmen


I love snow crabs from a restaurant on the beach at Chincoteague. We dip the crab into butter and it’s just like a tasty taste. – Connor

My best food is soup. My mom bakes the soup. I love mom’s soup. It tastes so good and it’s healthy to me. Well, it’s healthy to everybody, not only me! – Anita

My favorite food is macaroni. We don’t have it that often. It has cheese that makes it so good. – Josiah

My favorite food is pizza because it’s spiced and has lots of flavor. I like pepperoni, cheese, sausage, and supreme pizza. It’s good to have pizza. – Ethan

I like ice cream because it is smooth and delicious. Me and my dad made some ice cream. I ate mine too fast and got a brain freeze. It tastes so good because it has sugar in it. I like ice cream! – Uriah

My favorite food is fruit salad. I sometimes help make it. It is very fun. It was canned fruit, so my sister drains it then we put the liquid together and drink it. I like it because it’s juicy and fruity. – Lydia

I like wings. We only have them on special occasions. I like how you have to bite them off the bones. – Alex

I like hamburgers when my dad grills them. It is delicious when he puts wood in the grill. Then the burgers have that crisp smoky flavor. – Jerlyn

I enjoy eating shrimp. Everybody in my family likes it. I like shrimp because my mom puts some spices on it. – Michelle

My favorite food is tacos. I like them because they are spicy and I really like spicy. My family usually has it as a meal every now and then. And we also have it for birthdays. – Molly

I like pizza. I like it because some kinds have pepperoni. When I reach my goal for Book-It I get a personal pan pizza at Pizza Hut. Pizza is my favorite food. – Katie

Chicken Egg Drop Soup

I enjoyed reading the article about chicken soup, and thought you might like this recipe. I made it for lunch with crackers. My mother made a similar recipe when I was growing up.

14 oz can Fat Free Chicken Broth

One egg

2 Tbs grated cheese

Salt and Pepper to taste

Directions: In a small bowl combine the egg and grated cheese. Mix thoroughly. Set aside. In a saucepan bring the chicken broth to a boil. Add the egg and cheese mixture to the boiling broth. Continue to cook until the broth comes to a second boil. (Egg should appear scrambled.) Add salt and pepper to taste. Makes one serving. Enjoy!

Gluten-Free Peanut Butter Cookies

This is a delicious peanut butter cookie recipe that is gluten-free! I love it. I use Bob’s Red Mill gluten free all-purpose flour.

2 Tbs gluten-free all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp vanilla

1 egg

1 cup brown sugar

1 cup peanut butter

Directions: Preheat the oven to 350°. Mix all the ingredients together and roll into 1 inch balls. Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet for about 8 minutes. Makes 24 cookies
