Daniel Boone sophomore Ryan Owens came out of nowhere Friday, March 1 to capture the gold medal in the 200 yard freestyle at the District 3-AAA Swimming Championships at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg.
Owens was the 10th seed in the event, but vaulted to the top in the finals with a time of 1:42.07.
Owens also finished in third place in the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:40.08.
Governor Mifflin’s Garrett Brown won a silver medal in the boys’ 50 freestyle (21.41 seconds), and was part of the 200 free relay team of Brown, Owen Hanna, Sterg Dikos and John Kersikoski that finished second in a time of 1:26.96.
Brown was also fourth in the 100 freestyle in a time of 47.38 seconds. Dikos finished in eighth place in the 100 fly in a time of 53.08 seconds.
The Governor Mifflin boys finished in fourth place in the team standings while the Mifflin girls finished 11th.
The Mifflin 200 medley relay team of Kersikoski, Kyle McElroy, Evan Barbon and Hannah finished sixth in a time of 1:40.21.
The local medalist at the girls’ district meet included:
Elizabeth Chemey, Exeter, seventh in the 100 back (59.24 seconds); and Gabriella Johnson, eighth in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.23).
The Governor Mifflin girls’ free relay team of Johnson, Allie Mueller, Olivia Dennis and Morgan McMahon finished fifth in a time of 1:39.66.
The Governor Mifflin girls’ 200 medley relay team of McMahon, Johnson, Julie Adams and Mueller was sixth in 1:51.03.
