As we approach spring, the Fleetwood Area School District is proud to present three musicals for your enjoyment.
The first is The Wizard of Oz which will be performed by the students of Willow Creek Elementary School on Tuesday, March 19 at 6:30 p.m. The 47 performers in grades K-4 have been rehearsing twice a week since January. Co-directors Sandy Hawkins and Heidi Carletti, with the help of teachers Candi Barwinski, Sara Bush, Lauren Stahl, Jaime Wagner, Theresa Kelly and Sherry Kendra, have volunteered their time to bring the magic of theatre, music, and performing alive for the students. Over the past three years, the show has been very successful in helping to bring the students together in their new school. The Wizard of Oz will be held in the LGI room at Willow Creek Elementary. Admission is free (doors open at 6 p.m.). Donations will be accepted after the show to fund future performances at Willow Creek.
The middle school will present Annie Jr. on March 22 and 23. There are about 50 seventh and eighth grade students involved with the drama club’s performance this year. Students are working hard on their singing and dancing skills for the show. They particularly enjoy performing “Hard Knock Life” and give the choreography a modern twist that audiences will enjoy. Almost the entire cast is in the musical number “NYC”. This number includes dancing in the aisles which will be great fun for the audience! The drama club also went on a field trip last month to see Mary Poppins on Broadway. This was the first Broadway show for most of the students.
Rebecca Peters is directing the show. Michelle Rodriguez, Cindy Evans, Tina Hermany, and Jared Bitting have assisted with the music, set design, program design, developing and collecting props, practicing the music with students. The students have been very dedicated and often have great ideas about direction or choreography that really makes the show their own. They are working very hard to put together a great show for the community! The middle school is also planning a fifth and sixth grade production of Cinderella toward the end of the school year.
South Pacific is this year’s high school musical. It will be performed on Friday, April 5 and Saturday, April 6 at 7 p.m.in the High School Auditorium. The show has opportunities for many different voices and types of roles; Billis’ chicanery, Emile’s sophistication, and Nellie’s down-home, sincerity produce a wonderful blend on stage. Even though many consider this play dated, the fact that many of the actors performing in this version of the show are roughly the same age as the characters they portray, growing up quickly in a time of war, is still a powerful story.
From acting to scene construction, painting, setting up the lighting and sound systems, and the pit orchestra, students from many different grades are participating in the show. Students from the middle school fill a number of roles and even members of the faculty appear in the performances. Matt Biniek is directing the show and Sarah Shuey is the director of the orchestra. Elaine Hilbert designed the set and Kirby Barnett is responsible for construction of the set and for the sound and lighting systems. Tickets are for sale for general seating and members of the military are admitted free.
So if you are looking for a fun evening and enjoy seeing talented young people perform, please join us for one or all of our plays this spring.
