Big jazz happenings at Boyertown Area High School

Boyertown Area School District recently hosted their annual Jazz Festival.

Al Chez, trumpet player for the CBS Orchestra on the David Letterman Late Show, and his band Brothers of Funk as well as Saxophone artist Chris Vadala a member of Chuck Mangiones quartet wererecently featured at the annual Boyertown Area School District Jazz Festival on Saturday, March 23.

Middle school and high school jazz bands from Berks, Montgomery, and Chester Counties recently came to the Boyertown Area Senior High School to perform and compete. The Middle School division kicked off this years festival.

Performing schools included Kutztown, Pottstown, Spring Ford, Perkiomen Valley East and Perkiomen Valley West Middle schools as well as Boyertowns East and West jazz band and Boyertown Elementary jazz band. The Senior High School show started with a performance of the Boyertown Directors Jazz Band.


The Senior High School competition included Palisades, Saucon Valley, Easton, North Penn, and Daniel Boone Schools. The High School band portion ended with the Boyertown Senior High School jazz band featuring their guest artists. The night culminated with a performance by Al Chez and his Brothers of Funk Big Band.

Schools were judged on categories such as blend, balance, intonation, rhythm, precision, and soloists. Each organization will be given a rating determined by three judges. Ratings start with very good, excellent, outstanding to the highest rating of superior. Awards are also given to the Best Trumpet section, Trombone section, Woodwind section and Rhythm section as well as Outstanding soloists.
