Arrests were made on Kutztown University’s campus early this morning.
Former KU football players Shahaid Smith, 19, Crum Lynne, and Kali Smith, 19, Darby, were arrested simultaneously between 7 and 8 a.m. on March 28 in separate locations and for separate incidents. State Police assisted with the arrests.
David Johnson, KU Assistant Director University Relations, said Shahaid was arrested by Kutztown University Police at his residence, Golden Bear Village South. Shahaid was arrested and charged with involvement in the March 8 armed invasion and attempted robbery at a KU dorm room.
According to the Police Criminal Complaint report, two KU students heard a knock on their door at Deatrick Hall at about 1:30 a.m. Three men wearing black clothing from their noses down forced their way into the room. Two of the suspects were armed. One of the victims was struck in the left side of the upper check and ear area with a handgun. The victim sustained a laceration to his ear. The other victim confronted one of the suspects, who then pointed the gun in his face and demanded the location of something (which was not identified in the report), to which the victim said they didn’t have any there. The suspects searched the room and then left without taking anything. After the incident, Shahaid called one of the victims several times. The victims both told police that they knew Shahaid prior to the armed invasion and attempted robbery.
Robbery, criminal conspiracy, burglary, simple assault, criminal trespass, and simple assault attempt charges were filed against Shahaid in relation to the March 8 incident. Arraigned this morning by Judge Gail Greth, Fleetwood, Shahaid is at central processing and is being held in lieu of $200,000 bail.
Kali was arrested by Kutztown Borough Police on campus for a crime that occurred in spring 2012. Johnson could not provide the location of the arrest. Burglary, criminal conspiracy, receiving stolen property, robbery, theft by unlawful taking, recklessly endangering another person, possessing instruments of crime, terroristic threats, inflicting bodily injury, and simple assault charges were filed against him in relation to a March 30, 2012 robbery at Briar Circle South in Kutztown Borough, during which laptop computers, phone, game system and marijuana were taken, according to the Police Criminal Complaint report.
Also arraigned this morning by Judge Greth, Kali is in central processing and being held in lieu of $200,000 bail.
Kali also resides at Golden Bear Village South but does not reside with Shahaid, according to Johnson, who could not say if the two were related.
Johnson said Kali was a member of the Kutztown University Football Team until his arrest this morning. He has been suspended due to violation of the Athletic Department policy. Shahaid was a member of the football team until he quit in November 2012.
Shahaid is a sophomore majoring in special education. Kali is a sophomore majoring in business administration.
