Joseph John Thomas, 24, of 622 Buttonwood St., Reading, has been charged with Statutory Sexual Assault, Involuntary Deviate Sexual Intercourse, Aggravated Indecent Assault, Luring a Child into a Motor Vehicle,Corruption of Minors, Indecent Exposure, and Unlawful Contact with Minor for an incident occurring November 8, 2012.
Detectives from the Berks County District Attorney’s Child Abuse Unit initiated an investigation after receiving a report from the Muhlenberg Police Department relative to a sexual abuse of a female juvenile. During the investigation, detectives learned that a fourteen year old female was sexual abused by Thomas on five separate occasions during the months of October and November 2012.
Thomas initiated contact with the victim on a social media site whereby he lured her to a location and picked her up in his vehicle. The defendant drove the victim to his residence, which at the time was in Exeter Township, and engaged in sexual acts. Some of the sexual assaults took place at the victim’s home when her parent(s) were not present. Furthermore, detectives learned that the defendant sent text messages of a sexual nature to the victim, including but not limited to plans as to where to meet and what sexual acts would be performed.
The Children’s Alliance Center assisted Berks County Detectives in this investigation and performed a forensic interview of the victim. During the interview, the victim disclosed the sexual assaults by Thomas.
On April 3, 2013, detectives obtained a warrant of arrest for Thomas. The warrant was issued by Magisterial District Judge Paul Hadzick.
On April 4, 2013, detectives apprehended Thomas in the 200 block of Clymer Street, Reading, Berks County, PA.
The defendant was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Michael Leonardziak. Bail was set at $500,000 and he was committed to Berks County Prison in lieu of that bail.
