Brandywine Heights seniors and teachers will face off in a basketball game to help a local Mom recently diagnosed with two forms of cancer.
The April 28 fundraiser is for Regina Stump. She was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
‘I believe that this fundraiser is important for the school district to get involved and help the family, because teachers do care about our students and their families,’ said Nathanial Bentley, life skills teacher at Brandywine Heights Area Middle School.
Stump has five children, four boys and one girl. Three of the children still attend the Brandywine Heights Area School District.
‘As teachers, we want to be there for our students by supporting them inside and outside of school. Many of us (teachers) became educators to help others, and in this fundraiser we’re able to support a whole family,’ said Bentley.
The basketball game will be held on Sunday, April 28, at 4p.m. in the Brandywine Heights Area High School.
‘I thought that it would be fun to have the senior basketball players go against several teachers within the school district,’ said Bentley.
Bentley said there is no actual significance between the basketball game and the Stump family. However, he teaches one of her boys and he also coaches junior high basketball.
‘Fans can expect to see an exciting game where one of the teams will have some bragging rights throughout the district. Supporters will also have the opportunity to be called out onto the floor and participate in a fun activity where he or she could win a prize.’
The fundraiser is being organized by the Brandywine Heights Area Teachers Union and several student groups. It is being sponsored by JT’s Tribe, who helps contribute to the American Cancer Society.
There are no tickets being sold at this time. Donations are appreciated at the door. Any children under school age are free.
‘This is a special fundraiser for our entire community,’ he said.
Many businesses within the county are donating items to support the family, including donations from White Palm Restaurant, Viva Restaurant, Reading Royals, Fightin Phils, Snuzzles Restaurant, Bear Creek, Alisha’s Spa Euphoria, Chad Dreisbach (Pepperidge Farm), East Penn Manufacturing, Mission Screen Printing, 5th Street Diner, Muddy’s BBQ, Nancy Graber (Thirty-One Consultant), Kutztown Optimist Club, and Bentley hopes for more to come.
‘This event will help bring the community together to help one another. My hopes are to do this fundraiser every year to help one or more families in need,’ he said.
