On March 12 detectives from the Berks County District Attorney’s Child Abuse Unit began an investigation after receiving a report from the Shillington police department about a sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl. Through the course of the investigation detectives learned that the victim was sexual assaulted by Joseph John Thomas, 24 of the 100 block of South 4th street in Reading, six times between November 2012 and March 2013.
The victim initially met Thomas at a local roller skating rink and he attended the same church that the victim and her mother attended.
The 15 year old girl was assaulted three times at a municipal park and three times at her own home when her parents were not home. Through the course of the investigation, detectives found that Thomas sent multiple nude messages of himself to the victim via electronic communication.
The Children’s Alliance Center assisted Berks County Detectives in the investigation and performed a forensic interview with the victim. During the interview the victim told investigators that she was sexually assaulted by Thomas.
On April 18, detectives obtained an arrest warrant issued by District Judge Phyllis Kowalski.
Thomas, was incarcerated in Berks County Prison in lieu of $500,000 bail from a separate incident filed on April 4 by the District Attorney for the sexual assault of a 14 year old female. Currently he remains in Berks County Prison in lieu of $1 million bail.
