NEW HOLLAND, PA – Garden Spot Village will display entries in the 2013 Congressional Art Competition in its Main Street Gallery during the month of May.

The approximately three-dozen paintings, drawings, collages, prints, photographs and computer-generated images are the work of high school students in the 16th Congressional District of Pennsylvania, represented by Joseph R. Pitts (R-PA).

‘We invite our friends and neighbors from throughout the district to enjoy this wonderful display of artistic talent,’ said Colleen Musselman, director of life enrichment at Garden Spot Village.

In 1982, the Congressional Institute introduced the nationwide visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in each congressional district. In each participating district, panels of local artists select winning entries. Judging for the 16th Congressional District will take place from April 23 through April 30. The winners are recognized at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. The winning entry from each district will hang for one year in the tunnel between the United States Capitol and the Cannon House Office Building. Each week, thousands of people view the artwork.

Last year’s winner in the 16th Congressional District was Rachel Armstrong, from Garden Spot High School. Her entry was a pencil sketch of a veteran.

The public is invited to view the Congressional Art Competition entries from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. Garden Spot Village is located at 433 S. Kinzer Ave. in New Holland. To visit the Gallery, enter through the Village Square North entrance, and the receptionist will point the way to the art gallery. For directions, call 717-355-6000.
