Dr. Michael Mann, a lead author for the ground-breaking report ‘Observed Climate Variability and Change’ and contributor to the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, will be speaking to the Mid-Atlantic Renewable Energy Association at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30 in Breinigsville. The meeting is free and open to the public.
The topic of Dr. Mann’s talk will be his most recent book, ‘The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars: Dispatches from the Front Lines (2012) and the controversy that arose after his email was hacked. Dr. Mann was lead author of a climate science paper that produced what has become known as the ‘hockey stick graph.’ In his talk, Dr. Mann will give a personal, behind-the-scene view of the 2009 ‘Climategate’ scandal.
In 2007, the Nobel Peace Prize was jointly awarded to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Al Gore for ‘their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change.’ The IPCC works with volunteer scientists from around the work to review and assess recent scientific, technical and socio-economic information relevant to the understanding of climate change. The IPCC acknowledges Dr. Mann’s significant work as a contributor to the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize award.
In 2002, Dr. Mann was selected by Scientific American as one of the fifty leading visionaries in science and technology. He is Director of the Earth System Science Center at Penn State and a co-founder of the award-winning science website RealClimate.org.
After the talk, Dr. Mann will stay for a book signing. Books will be available for purchase at the event from Firefly Bookstore of Kutztown.
