Dear Editor, Last week’s article about the future of police coverage in Maxatawny was a fair and thorough piece,my compliments to Sean McDermott.

It’s hard to muster political energy when less than one percent of the Township was present for our second meeting concerning the above.

With that said,I think people are busy, stressed and have faith that we will do what is right about looking after law enforcement in the area.

Even so,the low attendance doesn’t give the Supervisors much to work with, and a mailer sent out next month is well intended but can be read lots of different ways, even with a single question.

I have spoken with members of both sides of the Borough/Township about contracting police work to Kutztown. When you surround a Borough with a Township, things get touchy, there’s natural paranoia and some rubbing and ruffling is normal. There seems to be mutual interest in doing good things at a minimal cost to hard working residents. There also seems to be a real reluctance to pursue this option by both sides.

I know that those I’ve spoken to are people of good faith, but it’s time to try harder. There is serious money required if we don’t,and serious money left on the table by the Borough if they don’t do their part.

I even had a prominent member of the Borough not even give me the courtesy of a promised phone call about this subject.

With our current economy and the subsequent stress it places on our residents,we are obliged as elected, appointed and simply involved citizens to make a full and exhaustive effort to husband our current and future tax dollars for the Township. This is a major part of it. I’m also of the opinion that the Borough just might welcome a major influx of revenue for use of an existing resource, and a good one at that.

The past relationship with the Borough and Township has been uneven, our present one seems to be the best in many years, and I’d like to think we can all rise above our frailties and do the very best for all concerned and see if we can live together in a cooperative way,to the benefit of all.

I urge people in both communities to speak up and ask their elected officials to make their very best effort to affordably and responsibly look after our communities and have a good working relationship with our neighbors.
