The Sunoco Race Fuels Money Trail racer returned to Maple Grove Raceway on Saturday and claimed not one, but two victories.
First, the Lititz, Pa., racer won the Ciccarone Racing Products Pro E.T. class, beating close friend Marty Flegal in the final.
Considering he already cashed in with a victory in the 10K Spring Footbrake Nationals on April 20 and has been winning nearly every round in his 1971 Vega in both Gold Rush Trailers Super and Pro, it’s no surprise that some might consider Moshier to be the king of Maple Grove this spring.
He actually got to prove that point. Moshier won the NHRA King of the Track championship, and got to add a Wally Parks Trophy to his growing collection of awards.
King of the Track is an NHRA program that gives the weekly racers from the Money Trail, as well as comers from other tracks, a chance to race for the special Wally Parks Trophy. After the Money Trail race, the winners from Super, Pro, P.C. Richard & Son Street and Ray’s Yamaha Top Bike eliminators took part in a special runoff race. The car with the best package was the winner.
Because Maple Grove’s 2012 King of the Track was rained out, it will hold two this season. The second one will be after the final Money Trail race on Aug. 31.
Moshier faced off against Barry Sauder (Super), Paul Werner (Street) and Cory Stuebner (Top Bike). Each run was a single with a blacked-out scoreboard.
The winner was announced in the staging lanes and a flabbergasted Moshier was handed the trophy.
Perhaps it shouldn’t have been much of a surprise as Moshier not only won Pro, but was also runner-up in Super on Saturday.
In Pro, Moshier got past the quarterfinals when Curt Rubendall (Pottstown, Pa.) broke out and then had a bye into the final.
Flegal (Lititz, Pa.) and his ’98 S-10 had the bye in the quarters and had to face Gary Simpers (North East, Md.) in the semis. He ran 9.234 seconds at 127.68 mph that was .03 over his dial in. Simpers was .07 over.
In the final, Moshier ran 9.091 at 135.00 that was .011 over, while Flegal broke out by .01.
In Super, Sauder (Ephrata, Pa.) was nearly perfect on his finals pass going 10.599 at 124.79 or .009 over the dial. Moshier was quicker off the starting line, but was .02 over.
To get to the final, Sauder kept nicking his dial-in. He first beat John Seiverling (Bethel, Pa.) in the quarters by going .017 over and then beat Lanny Werley (Leesport, Pa.) by going .007 over. Pulling double-duty, Moshier first got by Shayne Beck (Narvon, Pa.) and his dragster when he broke out, and then got past Mike Yarnall (Kennett Square, Pa.), who fouled at the start.
Werner (Sinking Spring, Pa.), the defending season champion in Street, had a pass of 11.642 at 98.31 to beat Mark Barnes Sr. (Coatesville, Pa.) in the final.
Werner’s ’80 Malibu station wagon continued its mastery of the class by beating Terry Shay (Exton, Pa.) in the quarters by using a superior reaction time and then defeating Dave Raser (Oxford, Pa.) in the semis by surviving a double-breakout.
Barnes, in a ’72 Chevy pickup, had a bye in the quarters and then advanced to the final when Scott Smith (Birdsboro, Pa.) fouled in the semis.
Stuebner (Hamburg, Pa.) won the final over Robert Willis (Bellmawr, N.J.). Riding an ’89 Kawasaki, Stuebner went 8.785 at 145.05 in the final, which was .06 over the dial, while Willis broke out.
In the quarterfinals, Stuebner faced his dad, Joe Stuebner (Hamburg, Pa.) and advanced when he broke out. He had a bye in the semis.
Willis defeated James Obrochta Jr. (Columbia, Pa.) in the quarters by going .01 over his dial, and made the final when Keith Alesin (Mohnton, Pa.) had a red light.
Junior Dragsters also raced with C.J. Ketterer (Sellersville, Pa.) picking up the win. He defeated Katlynn Hoffman (Reading, Pa.) in the final with an eighth-mile pass of 8.939 at 72.93 that was .03 over the dial. Hoffman, on the other hand, was .04 over.
To get to the final, Ketterer had to beat Matthew Witkowski (Elverson, Pa.) in the semis, surviving a double-breakout, and then his brother Jeremy in the semis. Jeremy Ketterer fouled at the start.
Hoffman had a bye in the quarters and then beat Caleb Holley (Carlisle, Pa.) in the semis by using a superior reaction time.
Carmen Koser (Sinking Spring, Pa.) won her first Trophy race of the season. In a ’79 Nova, she raced past Dylan Myers (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) in the final with a pass of 13.029 at 101.56.
