Come rain or shine, children and their families are invited to cast their lines in the Children’s Fishing Rodeo on May 11 from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Hunsicker’s Grove in Mertztown, Longswamp Township. This annual family event, in its 13th year, is a prime opportunity to teach children ages 4-15 the sport of fishing and thrill of the catch. At the end of the rodeo, the lake will open to public fishing.
Prizes will be awarded for the biggest catch in each age group. Contest divisions are by age in 45 minute periods for younger kids and 1 hour periods for older kids: 4-5 year olds fish 8:30-9:15 a.m.; 6-7 year olds fish 9: 25-10:10 a.m.; 8-10 year olds fish 10:20-11:20 a.m.; and 11-15 year olds fish 11:30-12:30 p.m. All participants must be registered one half hour before their age group is scheduled to fish. Each person must supply his or her own equipment.
All children must be at least 4 years old with their own equipment and accompanied by an adult. There will be a 3 fish per person limit. All Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission Regulations will be enforced. Artificial lures and bait permitted. Chris’s Bait & Tackle will display and sell merchandise. Participants are encouraged to bring sun block, lawn chairs, and rain gear as needed.
While fishing is the main event of the Children’s Fish Rodeo, participants may enjoy other activities around the park. Members of the Berks Fly Tyers Club will lure you in to try fly fishing with demos of casting and fly-tying, under the pavilion. To perfect their fishing skills, children may make a casting can and try for a prize while practicing their casting skills.
Children will enjoy a special program through the day: “WOW! Wonders of Watersheds” - From people to plants to the fish in Hunsickers Grove, water is essential to ALL living things. Join Jennifer Brooks, Environmental Educator, as we explore what impacts the health of the watershed you live in and investigate ways how you can protect our water quality.
