HONEY BROOK TWP. – A township man has been arrested after fleeing the scene of a crash that killed another man Sunday around 2:33 a.m.
According to state police at the Embreeville barracks, John Eric Slaymaker, 43, was driving a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee south on Route 10/Compass Road, when he ‘failed to maintain his lane of travel’ and left the road on the western side near Woodland Road.
The Jeep hit a concrete culvert, causing it to overturn and partially ejecting Slaymaker’s passenger, Karl Robert Killian, 51, also of Honey Brook.
Killian, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, was declared dead at the scene, police said.
Slaymaker left the crash scene but was located near his home shortly afterward by responding state troopers. He was arrested for suspicion of DUI, police said.
Charges of homicide by vehicle, homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, accidents involving death or personal injury, driving under the influence, careless driving, reckless driving, failure to stop and render aid, among others were filed against Slaymaker before Magisterial District Judge Michael J. Cabry III.
He was arraigned Sunday afternoon before Judge Harry W. Farmer Jr. and his bail was set at $100,000 cash bail.
He was remanded to Chester County Prison after failing to make bail.
Slaymaker faces a prelimnary hearing at 9:30 a.m. May 24 before Judge Cabry.
