The third grade students at Kutztown Elementary had the opportunity to participate in a ‘Camp Out’! The idea began last year when the third graders completed a morning on the Saucony Trail with Jen Wyland’s middle school students involved in an outdoor club. The third grade teachers began brainstorming ideas for a camp out.

Mrs. Blunt, our principal, and more than 30 parents and community members volunteered their time and talent. They made this camp out a wonderful success. We had activities planned for Friday night and Saturday morning. The students arrived at 6 p.m. on Friday and the left at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Friday Night Activities included Line Dancing, Hayrides, Science Stations (Angular measure, scale of the solar system, and telescope demonstration), Insects and Story Telling.

Our original plan was to sleep outside, but because of the weather predictions of rain, we slept inside on the gym floor.

Saturday Morning Activities included 7 a.m. wake up and eat breakfast and 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Stations.

Station 1 – Crafts Station 2 – Rope Tying

Station 3 – Camp Songs Station 4 – Outdoors Games

Station 5 – Orienteering Station 6 Pine Cone Birdfeeders

Station 7 – Landforms 10 AM – Movie – Turtle: Incredible Journey

This was a wonderful opportunity for the third grade to come together as a school community and it was fantastic that our parents and community members helped shared their time and talents. Because of the success of this year’s camp out, we are planning to make this an annual event.
