For Barbara Haas, owner of Haas Hearing Center in Churchtown, the best part of her job is helping people.
“I remember this one guy who came in here. He was profoundly deaf,” Haas said. “He couldn’t talk, but when I outfitted him with the right hearing aid he heard things he had never heard before. That was very rewarding.”
Haas, who has a master’s degree in audiology, has been fixing the hearing problems of the tri-county area since 1989. She provides evaluations, fittings and follow-ups all from the office she runs out of her home.
“I carry all different kinds of brands,” Haas said. “I really try to tailor each hearing aid to the customer’s needs.”
“I look at it like buying a car. There’s the Chevy, and there’s the Cadillac. Not everyone needs a Cadillac,” she added.
Haas said her goal is to have people hear the things they want to hear.
“Some people just want to hear their spouse, or their grandchildren. Some people are big music fans, and they want to keep that love going. Sometimes it’s a safety issue if the person just needs to hear the door or the phone,” Haas said. “I try to fit hearing aids to circumstance, and I try to give people flexibility.”
Haas has built her business on word of mouth, but she also consults at three nursing homes: Zerbe Sisters, Hickory House and Tel Hai.
According to Haas, the three leading causes of hearing loss are genetics, illness, and noise exposure – especially with the way the some people use their music players.
“Kids put those headphones right in their ears. A good rule of thumb is that if it’s so loud that the people around you can hear it that you should turn it down. It’s not good for your ears,” Haas said.
Haas treats people by appointment, and she treat patients six years of age and older.
“Pediatrics is a specialty,” Haas said.
Her office is located at 2469 Hammertown Road in Churchtown, and the telephone number is 717-445-5010. Visit www.HaasHearingCenter.com to find out more.
