Relay For Life of Twin Valley right around the corner

Monday, June 3, 2013

On June 14 to 15 from noon until noon, the American Cancer Society (ACS) will be holding its annual Relay For Life at the Twin Valley High School athletic stadium located at 4851 N. Twin Valley Road in Elverson.
Since 1985, Relay For Life has grown from one man – Dr. Gordy Klatt, who walked, jogged and ran around a track for 24 hours raising money for his local American Cancer Society unit – to a movement to eliminate cancer that now takes place in more than 5,200 communities in the United States, with nearly 4 million participants raising a total of more than $4.5 billion to fund the ACS’s mission.
This year the Relay For Life of Twin Valley has over 200 participants on 33 teams with more people registering every day. This team event builds friendship among team members who spend 24 hours together in efforts to raise money and fight cancer. Each team has at least one member walking or running the track during the entire event.
Everyone in the Twin Valley area who has been touched by cancer is invited to attend; Relay For Life is open to the general public with no fee for entrance. Teams will be selling items, holding raffles and participating in many fundraising efforts at the event. A variety of food and beverages are available for purchase with all proceeds going to the ACS. The event is also filled with music, live entertainment, games and other activities.
Relay For Life is about celebrating, remembering and fighting back.
The event celebrates cancer survivors by inviting all local cancer survivors to the Relay event. The Survivors’ Lap honors those who have won their fight against cancer and those currently undergoing treatment.
The community will remember all of those touched with cancer with the Luminaria Ceremony after dusk. The track is lined with luminaria marked with the names of survivors and those who lost their battle with cancer.
Together, everyone fights back by raising money for research, education, local patient services, and advocacy.
