Res Ipsa Loquitur, The Fenstermacher Walking Trail & Campus

There is no better way to describe the Lions-Rotary Club project of the Fenstermacher Walking Trail and Exercise Campus at the Boyertown Community Park than to say, “Res Ipsa Loquitur”. That is the Latin phrase law school students learn to explain something that defies a wordy explanation. Res Ipsa Loquitur means, “The Thing Speaks For Itself”. I used that phrase in my remarks at the dedication of the Fenstermacher Campus on June 1st after searching for adjectives and superlatives to describe the one mile walking trail, 2 exercise areas of equipment for youth and adults and the 18 hole Disc Golf Course, all of which are located in the God created beauty of the Boyertown Community Park.

How did this $250,000 project happen in 18 months? I am fond of saying, “ Good things do not happen by themselves; it takes good people to make good things happen”. That statement is so very appropriate in speaking of this project. Starting with the good person, Francis “ Murph” Fenstermacher, making the generous bequest in his will to the Boyertown Lions and Rotary Clubs; to the Lions and Rotarians putting aside their good natured rivalry to combine their bequests to adopt the project; to the Pottstown area Health & Wellness Foundation making a $70,000 grant to add to their mission of healthy living and exercise; to the grant of $10,000 from the Berks County Community Foundation; to the contractor, Jim Mack, and to the Boyertown Borough Council and Recreation Board for sharing the vision of the Exercise Campus. These are the, “Good People Making Good Things Happen” in Boyertown.

As one watches people of all ages ( dogs too) using the trail and equipment, one realizes that which was built is not just a physical project, but rather it has created an atmosphere of pride and purpose for and in our community. There is an old saying, “Build it and they will come”. Well, it has been built and you are coming to it. May we continue to take pride in our community and continue to add to it so we all feel proud to say, “We are from the Boyertown Area”.
