Edgar C. Romig, 87

Edgar C. Romig, 87, of Mertztown, died June 10, 2013 in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.

He was the husband of Violet B. (Benjamin) Romig. They were married for more than 40 years. His first wife, Evelyn (Fenstermacher) Romig died in 1969.

Born in Longswamp Township, he was a son of the late Clarence and Annie (Geisinger) Romig.

Mr. Romig was a member of the lutheran congregation of Huff’s Union Church, Alburtis.


He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in World War II.

In 1962, he went to work for the former Empire Steel, Laureldale, until his retirement in 1987. He also worked on the family farm in Longswamp Township for many years.

Mr. Romig was an original member of the former Longswamp VFW, Mertztown. He was also a member of Pike Township Sportsmen’s Association, and the local Plow Boys Association.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 14, at 10:30 a.m. from Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., 25 East Weis St., Topton, with Reverend Jane M. Kropa and Reverend Dave N. Schoen officiating. Interment, with military honors provided by Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion Honor Guard, Topton, will follow in Huff’s Church Union Cemetery, Alburtis. Relatives and friends are invited to call Thursday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and Friday morning from 10 to 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home.

Michael J. Demshock, III

Michael J. Demshock, III, 47, loving son and brother, of Maidencreek Twp., formerly of Levittown, passed away June 5, 2013 in his residence of natural causes.

Born in Bristol, Bucks County, he was the son of Anna V. (Tregea) Demshock of Maidencreek Twp. and the late Michael J. Demshock, Jr.

He was a member of Holy Guardian Angels Roman Catholic Church.

He was an avid Dead Head who enjoyed gardening. He also enjoyed watching Nascar and College Football, especially “Alabama”.

Surviving along with his mother is one sister, Sandra Ann Demshock and two brothers, Jeff J. Demshock, husband of Linda and Mark E. Demshock and fiancé Holly and Drew of Alabama.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on June 10 at 10 a.m. in Holy Guardian Angels Roman Catholic Church, 3121 Kutztown Rd., Reading, PA with interment to follow in Gethsemane Cemetery. Family and friends could call Monday morning from 9 a.m. until time of service in the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

Carl C. Groff, 76

Carl C. Groff, 76, of Maidencreek Twp., died Saturday, June 8, 2013 in his residence.

He was the husband of Shirley F. (Seifrit) Groff. They were married on Oct. 2, 1965 and celebrated 47 years of marriage.

Born in West Reading, he was the son of the late Lester and Evelyn (Steinmetz) Groff.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Carl worked as a tool storage man for Dana Corporation, Reading. He and his wife also owned and operated Groff’s Antiques and Second Hand Shop, West Hamburg. Carl was an auctioneer for 34 years; and auctioneered for the Kutztown Folk Festival for 24 years.

He enjoyed cowboy movies and going to casinos. Carl was a member of the Alcoholics Anonymous group at Zion’s Lutheran Church, Shoemakersville.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters: Sherry L. (Groff), wife of Jay Clouser, Matamoras, Pike County; Christina L. (Groff), wife of Ronald Workman, Landenberg, Chester Co.; and Drena L. (Adams), wife of Theodore Romberger, Shoemakersville; nine grandchildren: Shawn, Michael, Jessica, Brandi, Christian, Noah, Angela, Pamela, and Stephanie; and five great-grandchildren: Logan, Karly, Jeffrey David, Jr., Shannen, and Carter. Carl is also survived by one brother: Ralph Groff, and his wife Grace, Leesport; and one sister: Gloria (Groff) Michael Kauffman, widow of Kenneth Kauffman, Tilden Twp.

He was predeceased by one brother: Robert Groff; and two sisters: Joyce (Groff) Peters and Verna (Groff) Reimert.

Services will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. from Leibensperger Funeral Homes, Inc., 223 Peach Street, Leesport. A viewing will be held in the funeral home Thursday 12:30 to 2 p.m. Burial will be private in Christ Little Tulpehocken Church Cemetery, Bernville. Gregory Allen Hilbert Jr., 16

Gregory Allen Hilbert Jr., 16, of Fleetwood, passed on June 4, 2013 in the Reading Hospital Medical Center.

Born in Phoenixville on Aug. 1, 1996, son of Gregory A. Hilbert,Sr. and Victoria L.(Lazowicki) Hilbert.

Music was his life and playing the guitar his passion. As a junior at Oley Valley High School where he was known as the school’s resident guitarist, for he would always have his guitar and play when ever possible. Greg loved to play guitar,bass, drums and write his own music. He was a very loving and caring person who was concerned about the world and why people could not live in peace. Greg loved being outdoors and going on nature walks. Eating healthy was a major part of his life and would lecture friends and family on eating the healthiest foods.

He is survived by his parents and brothers Nikolas A. Hilbert at home and Joshua Hilbert of Wilmington, Del. Also maternal grandparents John A. and Kristine (Poust) Lazowicki of Inverness, Fla., and paternal grandparents Ernest and Barbara (Greiss) Hilbert of Bechtelsville and maternal great grandmother Helen Poust.

Virginia M. Heffner, 89

Virginia M. Heffner, 89, formerly of Kutztown died June 4, 2013 in Quakertown Center.

She was the wife of Sterling E. Heffner also a guest at Quakertown Center.

LaRay Catherine Moyer, 89

LaRay Catherine Moyer, 89, of Oley, passed away June 5, 2013 in ManorCare, Sinking Spring.

She was the wife of Edwin Himmelreich Moyer, who died Aug. 3, 1984.

Born in Maidencreek Township, she was a daughter of the late Clarence A. and Mabel K. (Bubbenmoyer) Burkhart.

LaRay was a member of Zion-Spies Evangelical Reformed Church, Alsace Township.

She was a 1941 graduate from Ontelaunee High School.

Surviving are her children: Beverly A., wife of Richard W. Ehst, Rockland Township; Barry E. Moyer, husband of Jackie, Williamsburg, Va., and Brenda K. Moyer, Oley.

She is also survived by her sister, Jean E., wife of Paul H. Moyer, Maidencreek Township.

Additional survivors include three grandchildren: Kim, Jennifer, and Joanna, and three great-grandchildren: Dylan, Ryan and Carson.

LaRay was predeceased by her brother Richard C. Burkhart.

Services will be held Monday at 11:00 a.m. in Blankenbiller Funeral Home, 423 Main St., Oley, PA 19547. A viewing will be held from 9:00-11:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be in Spies-Zion Cemetery.

Betty J. Quire, 77

Betty J. Quire, 77, of Fleetwood, passed away at Reading Hospital May 31, 2013.

Betty was born in Reading, on Jan. 12, 1936.

She was the daughter of the late Martin and Ethel (Bechtold) Scholl.

She was pre-deceased by her husband Donald E. Quire in 1991.

Betty was pre-deceased by a daughter Robin A. Dautrich in Nov. 30, 2002 and by a three brothers: Walter, Paul, and Warren.

Betty worked at Prospectus-Berco as a care giver for many years and from where she retired in 2011. She was a member of Berks Encore Seniors Group and Red Hats Society. She volunteered at Reading Urban Ministry and Fleetwood Food Pantry and CUCMR Food Pantry. She did collections and donations for ADAPT Association with the support of a local college. She coordinated Holiday meals and gift bags. She coordinated Thanksgiving meals with local grocery stores.

Survivors include a daughter: Deborah A. Quire and fiancé Joseph Sciurca of Shillington; two sons: Michael C., husband of Anne Quire of West Lawn, and Donald E. Quire, Jr., husband of Jeannie S. Winsness of Exton; a sister: Shirley (Scholl) Strausser of Reading; a grandson: Michael C. Jr., husband of Amanda M. Quire; a granddaughter: Heather; and two step-grand children: Dwayne Quire and Christia Quire.

Helen A. Yoh, 89

Helen A. Yoh, 89, formerly of Wernersville, passed away June 2, 2013 in Pinebrook Personal Care, Orwigsburg, Schuylkill County.

Born in Fleetwood, she was the daughter of the late Edwin J. and Susan (Heffner) Kutz. She was the wife of Edwin L. Yoh who passed away March 23, 2002; they were married for 55 years.

Mrs. Yoh was a 1941 graduate of Kutztown High School and Reading Business Institute in 1943. She was employed at Crown Knitting Mills as a payroll clerk and later worked part-time in the outlet store.

After retiring she enjoyed playing golf, camping, playing cards and watching the Philadelphia Phillies baseball games.

Survivors include a daughter: Kay A. (Yoh) James, Ontelaunee Twp.; son Gery E. Yoh, husband of Chris Yoh, Harrisburg. There are 3 grandchildren: Dean A. James, Christopher G. James, G. Matthew James and 5 great-grandchildren. Other survivors include a sister Mildred Levan, Topton; sister-in-law Anna Kutz, Kutztown, and several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank Pinebrook Personal Care and Arcadia Hospice for the excellent care Mrs. Yoh was given during her stay at Pinebrook Personal Care for the past 2 years.

Betty L. Young, 74

Betty L. Young, 74, of Maidencreek Township, passed away June 1, 2013 in St. Joseph Medical Center.

Born in Grill, PA she was the daughter of the late Elmer C. Young and Miriam (Boone) Young.

She was employed by the Reading Hospital for 31 years in the housekeeping department retiring in 2009.

She is survived by her loving companion of 27 years, LeRoy H. “Tiny” Strunk with whom she resided. Mrs. Young was a Loving and Devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother to Kimberly A. Buehrer wife of Robert R. Buehrer of Blandon and Tina M. Kautz wife of Ralph W. Kautz II of Kenhorst, 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her step son LeRoy H. Strunk, Jr. husband of Cammie S. Strunk of Robesonia and step daughter Jennifer L. Boyer wife of Dwight D. Boyer of Douglassville along with her siblings Douglass Young of Florida and Barbara Lentz of Berks County. Also surviving is dog and her faithful companion A.J. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
