The members of the Kutztown Floriculture Team won gold for their efforts at the 84th FFA Activities Week and State Convention held June 11 to 13 at Penn State University.
The floriculture team from Kutztown High School, consisting of seniors Kayla Fusselman and Jessica Sterner as well as junior Katie Eigenbrod and sophomore Kristy Heffner, worked through a series of five areas of specialization including plant and tool ID, problem solving/decision making, floral design, identifying/controlling plant disorders, and pests, a written test followed by a team activity which this year was designing floral pieces for a wedding.
Individually the four team members placed also. Katie Eigenbrod wonsecond, Kristy Heffner placed third, Kayla Fusselman placed fourth, and Jessica Sterner placed eighth in the field of 71 contestants. Katie and Kristy received special plaques for their individual placings.
The Kutztown Team will move on to represent Pennsylvania at the National FFA Convention and Expo in Louisville, Kentucky from Oct. 30 through Nov. 2.
Along with the Floriculture Team, Kutztown fielded a horse judging team consisting of Jordan Tucker, Jamie Siefert, Sarah Politi, and Jennifer Kehl, in addition to a small gas engines team consisting of Nathan Miller and Barron Kistler who received an individual bronze award for his efforts.
