This weekend, members of the Boyertown community will gather at the Boyertown Area Senior High football stadium to celebrate cancer survivors and fundraise to combat the disease.
The sixth annual Relay for Life will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday and will last 24 hours. Money raised will go directly to the American Cancer Society, with a large portion benefitting Berks County. The 2013 fundraising goal is $233,000. The event is free and all are welcome to attend.
The theme of this year’s Relay is “Movies.” Many activities are planned for the weekend including an opening ceremony and parade of 2013 Relay teams, a Fight Back Ceremony, an Advocacy Ceremony, a Survivor/Caregiver Ceremony followed by a dinner, the Luminaria Ceremony, and a closing ceremony featuring the Boyertown Ceremonial Alumni Band. Additionally, at 12:10 p.m. on Saturday, there will be a live performance of Children’s music by Michael Kropp, and at 3:30 p.m. there will be an Ellixon’s Tae Kwon Do demonstration.
A Sunrise Worship Service will be offered at 7 a.m. Sunday.
There are 45 teams already registered, but registration is open throughout the event. The event is also featuring sign-ups for Cancer Prevention Study-3, a long-term study that will help researchers better identify the lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer. Sign-ups will take place between noon and 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Parking will be available at Boyertown Junior High West with a continuous shuttle service running from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Sunday.
Handicap parking will be available at the high school.
