Kutztown The Kutztown American Legion Cougars began the week with a good old fashioned pitchers dual at Muhlenberg. The game took 11 innings but Kutztown finally broke through on the scoreboard and defeated the A’s, 1-0.
Dustin Smith began the 11th inning for Kutztown with a walk. He then stole second and third bases before Cody Reichert scored him on a sacrifice fly.
Kyle Hartman was the starting pitcher for Kutztown and pitched nine scoreless innings. Smith was the winning pitcher, hurling two innings in relief.
Drew Entriken had three hits for Kuttown (two singles and a double), while Andrew Gernert doubles.
On June 18, Kutztown played host to Oley/Topton. The game went 10 innings when the Patriots scored six runs to defeat Kutztown, 10-4.
The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the third. The Patriots came right back with two in the top of the fourth to tie the game.
Gernert drove in a pair of runs for Kutztown and Dustin Smith drove in one.
On June 19, Kutztown hit the road to take on Hamburg. The Reds scored at lead one run in every inning as they defeated the Cougars, 13-3. The game was called after five innings due to the mercy rule.
Hamburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning, then added a two more in the second, one in the third, one in the fourth, then exploded for seven in the fifth to end the game.
Max Randolph was the losing pitcher.
On June 20, the Cougars played host to Fleetwood. Kutztown scored at least one run in each inning but the first which was enough to defeat the Wildcats, 6-3.
Dustin Smith led the Kutztown offense with two hits, two runs scored and one RBI. Austin Isamoyer contributed with two hits, one RBI and one run scored. Brad Miller drove in a pair of runs.
Kyle Hartman was the winning pitcher, hurling a complete game and fanning three Fleetwood hitters.
Dustin Smith was named the Schuylkill/Berks League’s Player of the Week for the week of June 9-15.
Oley/Topton On June 18, Oley/Topton took on Kutztown. The game went 10 innings when the Patriots scored six runs to defeat Kutztown, 10-4.
The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the third. The Patriots came right back with two in the top of the fourth to tie the game.
Zach Eddinger got the win in relief for the Patriots. Eddinger pitched five innings and allowed one unearned run striking out six.
Patriots Luke Erb, Bryce Galzcynski and Jon combined for
eight hits and three RBIs. Bryce Galzcynski 2-for-3, Luke Erb 3-for-5 and one RBI, Jon Dekovitch 3-for-4 and two RBIs, Tyler vonHummel 1-for-2 and one RBI.
‘Although we made too many mistakes which Kutztown punished every single time, the way we battled back
shows the character and chemistry of this team,’ said head coach Fred van Gulik.
On June 20, Oley played host to a Muhlenberg in a very big game for both teams. The Patriots broke a 1-1 tie with five runs in the bottom of the sixth and won the game, 6-1.
Garrett Pelko was the winning pitcher, allowing one unearned run on three hits and five walks in six innings of work. He struck out seven. Nick Distasio came on to pitch a scoreless seventh inning.
The offense was led by Matt Fisher who had three hits, two RBIs and one run scored. Hunter Renninger had two hits and two runs scored while Distasio also had a pair of hits. Zach Ernst pitched in with a single and two RBIs.
Fleetwood The Fleetwood Wildcats traveled to Pine Grove on June 15 and came home with a 6-3 victory. Three runs in the top of the seventh was the difference for Fleetwood.
Christian Schwenig had a pair of hits for the Tigers and Clay Weidemoyer tripled and drove in a run.
Jake Wapinsky was the winning pitcher.
On June 16, Fleetwood traveled to Muhlenberg and came home with a 7-4 victory. The A’s held a 4-1 lead after three innings, but Fleetwood came back with five runs in the fourth, and one more insurance run in the fifth.
Tyler Emge led the Fleetwood offense with three hits and a run scored. He also stole two bases.
Weidemoyer was the winning pitcher.
On June 19, the Wildcats played host to Wyomissing. Weidemoyer’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh gave Fleetwood a 6-5 victory.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Then Wyomissing came back with a run in the third, two in the fifth and two more in the sixth to tie the game at 5-5.
Weidemoyer had a double and two RBIs for the winners while Wes Hawkins had three hits and scored two runs.
Brandon Koharcheck was the winning pitcher.
On June 20 the Wildcats hit the road to take on Kutztown. The Cougars scored at least one run in each inning but the first which was enough to defeat the Wildcats, 6-3.
Fleetwood held a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth. Kutztown came back with one in the fourth, one in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
